SWFC annual Christmas Luncheon at Hillsborough Stadium
Transcript
00:00So, we've got like four strands to it. We've got the Primary School Programme, where we deliver physical education in primary schools.
00:08But we do a lot of work around interventions with the Premier League Primary Stars funding from the Premier League Charitable Fund.
00:15So we do interventions around PSHE Maths and English.
00:20So we use the power of the Sheffield Wednesday badge to go in and try and engage young people in educational activities
00:26where they may be falling behind or where they might be struggling to attend primary school.
00:31And it's just a sort of innovative way of trying to engage young people into those activities.
00:39And hopefully it helps the future at best.
00:42And you've been mucking in today, getting your hands dirty and handing out some meals.
00:47So, events like that, why do you think they're so important to bring people together?
00:52Well, you can see already in there, like there's all members of the community already socialising together, talking together.
00:59It starts building collaboration networks and connections with one another.
01:04And you can see that it's probably an opportunity for some of the people in the room as well that wouldn't normally have those kind of environments
01:11where there's a lot of people in a room sitting down having a meal together.
01:15There's obviously prizes, so there's people laughing, there's music on.
01:19I think it just generally helps people's mental health to be out socialising, talking to other people and just connecting really.
01:27And it's good for us to help out as staff because it gives us an opportunity to see some of the participants
01:32and gives us an opportunity to kind of give back.
01:36And they can hopefully physically see that we're here to help the community really.
01:41That's the purpose of the community programme.
01:43We want to help all areas of the community and support people.
01:47So are you going to start by telling me who you are and why you're here today?
01:50Yeah, so I'm Bonnie and I'm the Community Champion at Tesco Saddle Street.
01:54And this is Nicola, she's the Community Champion at Infermary round Tesco.
01:59And what we do is we help out charities local.
02:04So we run the Shackles Wednesday, the Venture Group, a lot of time jobs.
02:08So we prepare all the food, the raffle, donations, help set it up.
02:15We just help out.
02:17And what impact do you think events like this have on the community?
02:21A lot. A lot of it.
02:23Some people can't get out or they don't have any friends.
02:26So to bring them out in the local community, get them to talk, it helps them a lot, a lot.
02:31And have you had your Christmas dinner yet?
02:33Not yet.
02:34Not yet.
02:36I was going to ask you what it was like. Maybe you haven't had it then.
02:38I've had the soup, which was nice.
02:40It had quite a kick to it, it was quite spicy.
02:44The Community Champion round is more about bringing communities together and how Tesco and the community can help.
02:53And obviously the football community is also quite a big community.
02:56Do you think events like this, which are held in the stadium, bring people together?
03:01Yeah. It brings everyone together.
03:05Obviously it's the culture that went through this, but everyone's been amazing today.
03:11And to come with a friend, to be able to socialise with other people and get to know other people.
03:16And actually to meet some of the team and the players.
03:19It's a really positive experience really.
