'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller chat with THR at the premiere and describe what it is like to see fans embrace the 'Sonic' franchise. Plus, they dish on the fun they had bringing the character of Shadow to life.

00:00Okay, I mean, this franchise is incredible. I mean, I'm thinking back to when we got introduced to,
00:04and I feel like a mea culpa about this because I feel bad calling him Ugly Sonic,
00:08but when we were introduced to Ugly Sonic and then the fans have just, I think, defied the
00:12expectations of this franchise. I mean, how has it surprised you seeing how the fans embrace this
00:17franchise and where we are today with the third film? Well, I mean, that's why it's good sometimes
00:21that you don't always put the writers in charge of things. We didn't know if it was a good idea
00:26to change the design because you didn't know if the people complaining online were even going to
00:31see the movie in the first place. So the fact that they changed the design and that people
00:35really embraced the movie surprised even us. People genuinely gave us a second chance,
00:41which kind of restored some of my faith in humanity, to be honest. Yeah, it's amazing.
00:46And now this time around, I mean, we got the second one, we got Idris Elba as Knuckles,
00:50and then it's like, who can we get for the third one? And Keanu Reeves immediately says, yes,
00:54I heard he was the first choice. What does Shadow bring to this franchise? What can you
00:57tell me about this character? Well, because, you know, Knuckles was a tough guy, but I think
01:01certainly fans always knew that he was being misled and he was, you know, a softy inside.
01:08So it was fun to play with, you know, outwardly cuddly character who's a real serious mean guy
01:15like Shadow. Shadow really brings a lot of intensity and kind of big operatic emotions
01:21and some real drama to the series, more so than any of our characters have before.
01:27Because I mean, Knuckles, he's so deadpan. You know, Sonic is so ambitious.
01:32How would you describe Shadow's kind of attitude? He's serious. I mean, you can say Knuckles is
01:37serious as well, but Knuckles is, you know, he misunderstands things. Shadow understands
01:44everything perfectly. And he's just he's dark. He's got a lot of anger issues. He's going to
01:51have to work through. Are you familiar with the Maddie theory? What is the Maddie theory?
01:56OK, so in the color theory. Yes. No comment. I was going to say she's wearing pink in that poster
02:03over there. No comment. Well, let me ask you something you can answer. What do you envision
02:08for the future of the franchise? We I mean, it's funny if it was up to us, we'd like some more
02:15outer space stuff. We've done a lot of exploring on Earth and obviously Earth is Sonic's homo,
02:21you know, true home, really adopted home. We just want to meet more characters and have
02:27adventures that are even bigger and more colorful and just keep growing the franchise.
