00:00My name is Carmen Emme. I'm the writer and director of Plain Clothes, and our film is
00:10premiering in the U.S. Dramatic Competition in the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Every
00:16time I say it, I'm going to cry. Shout out to Ash, who delivered the news after I chaotically
00:22missed the call. I first got the idea in 2016 when I read an article in the LA Times about
00:29undercover police officers who were arresting men in a Long Beach Park bathroom. Around
00:35that time, when I read the article, my brother was becoming a police officer, and through
00:40my conversations with him and in thinking about my own coming out experience, the character
00:46of Lucas was born. Lucas is played by Tom Blythe, who was an absolute dream to work
00:51with, and he was supported by the incredible Russell Tovey and Maria Dizia, and an entire
00:58cast who really rallied together to tell a story that's ultimately about what happens
01:04when you police your feelings. I've always wanted to bring a movie back home to Syracuse.
01:11I wrote it here. I set it here in the 90s, which was around the time that I started suppressing
01:17my feelings as a boy, and looking back and thinking about this whole experience, I think
01:23that I made this as a way for my seven-year-old self to finally exhale. I can't wait for everyone
01:31to see all the hard work that the cast and crew put into our film. I can't wait for you
01:35to see the performances. I can't wait for you to hear the music, and I'm so grateful
01:40to Sundance for this opportunity. Thank you.
