From the early days of the republic to modern times, the personal lives of U.S. presidents have often been as captivating as their political careers. This video delves into some of the most notorious affairs in presidential history, exploring how these relationships impacted both the individuals involved and the nation as a whole. We examine the long-standing affair between FDR and Lucy Mercer Rutherfurd, the scandalous liaison between Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky, and the complex relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings.

We also look at lesser-known affairs, such as Lyndon B. Johnson's numerous dalliances and Grover Cleveland's pre-presidential scandal. Through these stories, we gain insight into the personal struggles of those in power, the evolving attitudes towards presidential privacy, and the often blurry line between personal and public life in American politics. Whether viewed as scandalous indiscretions or human frailties, these affairs have left an indelible mark on presidential history and continue to fascinate us to this day.

00:00But we're grateful to them, to Bobby Darin, and to Miss Carol, who was going to come,
00:07and to Miss Monroe, who left a picture to come all the way east, and I can now retire
00:13from politics after having had a happy birthday sung to me in such a sweet and open way.
00:20Happy birthday indeed, Mr. President.
00:22From the scandalous affair between Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton to the infamous
00:26Stormy Daniels scandal involving former President Trump, the White House has long been associated
00:31with secret liaisons and forbidden romance.
00:34But how much truth is there to these portrayals?
00:36Throughout history, several U.S. presidents have been accused of engaging in extramarital
00:41affairs, some even within the hallowed halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
00:59John F. Kennedy
01:00When it comes to presidential affairs, John F. Kennedy's name often tops the list.
01:05The 35th president was known for his charisma and good looks, but behind closed doors, he
01:10reportedly engaged with numerous extramarital relationships.
01:14One of his most well-known relationships was with Marilyn Monroe, who famously sang Happy
01:18Birthday Mr. President at Madison Square Garden in 1962.
01:22While there's no concrete evidence of a sexual relationship between them, the performance
01:26fueled widespread speculation.
01:28But his affairs weren't limited to Hollywood starlets.
01:31He was said to have had liaisons with White House staffers, including Secretaries Priscilla
01:36Ware and Jill Cowan.
01:38According to reports, the two women were nicknamed Fiddle and Faddle and would often go skinny
01:42dipping with the president in the White House pool.
01:45Another notable alleged affair was with Mary Pinchot Meyer, an artist and family friend.
01:50Their relationship was said to have lasted for several years, and Meyer was even given
01:54her own key to the White House.
01:56Tragically, she was murdered in 1964, and conspiracy theories have linked her death
02:01to her relationship with Kennedy.
02:03His alleged infidelities were an open secret in Washington, with his wife Jackie reportedly
02:08aware of his indiscretions.
02:10While the exact timeline and nature of Franklin and Lucy's affair remain unclear, it was evident
02:16that Lucy held a special place in Franklin's life, as noted by those close to them.
02:21FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
02:22Franklin Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, is remembered for leading
02:27the country through the Great Depression and World War II.
02:30But his personal life was marred by allegations of infidelity.
02:33The most significant of these was his long-standing affair with Lucy Mercer Rutherford, who had
02:38been his wife Eleanor's social secretary.
02:41The affair reportedly began in 1914, when Eleanor was away on vacation.
02:46In 1918, Eleanor discovered love letters between FDR and Mercer, leading to a crisis in their
02:51marriage.
02:52While the couple stayed together, perhaps for political reasons, the relationship was
02:56forever changed.
02:57Eleanor offered Franklin a divorce, but he declined partly due to pressure from his mother,
03:01who threatened to cut him off financially if he left his wife.
03:04Though the affair was supposed to end, it reportedly continued during FDR's presidency.
03:09Mercer visited the White House on numerous occasions, often when Eleanor was away.
03:14In fact, she was present when FDR died in 1945, causing great distress to Eleanor when
03:20she learned of it.
03:21Lyndon B. Johnson
03:38Lyndon Johnson, who assumed the presidency after Kennedy's death, was known for his
03:42crude behavior and alleged infidelities.
03:44His affairs were so numerous and blatant that he once reportedly said,
03:48I have had more women by accident than Kennedy ever had on purpose.
03:52One of his most well-known alleged affairs was with Alice Glass, which began in 1937
03:58and continued into the early years of his presidency.
04:00Glass was reportedly in love with Johnson and believed that he shared her passion for
04:05social justice.
04:06However, the relationship ended when they disagreed over the Vietnam War.
04:10Johnson's wife, Lady Bird, was reportedly aware of his infidelities but chose to ignore
04:15them.
04:16Mercer extended to the White House where he reportedly had no qualms about conducting
04:20affairs.
04:21He was known to use a buzzer system to alert his staff when his wife was approaching, giving
04:25him time to compose himself if he was with another woman.
04:29Warren G. Harding
04:30Warren G. Harding, the 29th president, served only two years before his death in 1923.
04:36But his presidency was marked by scandal, including allegations of extramarital affairs.
04:41The most notorious was his relationship with Nan Britton, which came to light after his
04:46death when Britton published a tell-all book titled The President's Daughter.
04:50In her book, she claimed that she had given birth to Harding's illegitimate daughter
04:54and that they had had sexual encounters in various locations, including a White House
04:58closet.
04:59For years, Harding's family denied these claims, but in 2015, DNA testing confirmed that Britton's
05:05daughter, Elizabeth Ann, was indeed Harding's child.
05:08He had another long-term mistress, Carrie Fulton Phillips, with whom he exchanged explicit
05:13love letters.
05:14These were so scandalous that the Harding family went to great lengths to keep them
05:18sealed, finally succeeding in having them locked away in 2014.
05:22Grover Cleveland Grover Cleveland, the only president to
05:43serve two non-consecutive terms, faced a sex scandal even before he entered the White House.
05:48In 1874, he allegedly fathered an illegitimate child with Maria Halpin, a woman he'd been
05:53seeing casually.
05:55When Halpin became pregnant, Cleveland, who was unmarried at the time, took responsibility
05:59for the child.
06:00He arranged for the baby to be placed in an orphanage and provided financial support.
06:04But the circumstances are controversial.
06:07Halpin later claimed that Cleveland had sexually assaulted her, though Cleveland always maintained
06:11that the relationship was consensual.
06:32Bill Clinton Perhaps the most infamous presidential affair
06:36in recent memory is that of President Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky.
06:40Their relationship, which began in 1995, when Lewinsky was a 22-year-old White House
06:45intern, eventually led to Clinton's impeachment in 1998.
06:49The affair came to light in January 1998, initially denied by Clinton with his famous
06:55statement,
06:56I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky.
06:59However, evidence soon emerged that contradicted this claim, including a blue dress owned by
07:04Lewinsky that contained DNA evidence of a sexual encounter with Clinton.
07:08The scandal consumed his second term, leading to a special counsel investigation and ultimately
07:13to his impeachment by the House of Representatives on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.
07:19While Clinton was acquitted by the Senate and remained in office, the scandal tarnished
07:23his legacy and had far-reaching political consequences.
07:27Woodrow Wilson Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the
07:31United States, is often remembered for his leadership during World War I and his efforts
07:36to establish the League of Nations.
07:38However, his personal life was also marked by controversy, including allegations of an
07:42extramarital affair.
07:44Wilson's alleged affair was with Mary Ellen Hulbert Peck, a woman he met while vacationing
07:49in Bermuda in 1907.
07:51At the time, he was married to his first wife, Ellen, but he reportedly found in Peck an
07:55intellectual equal with whom he could discuss politics and literature.
07:59The relationship lasted several years, during which Wilson wrote Peck numerous intimate
08:04letters, and while there's no concrete evidence that the relationship was physical,
08:08the emotional intimacy evident in their correspondence was clear.
08:12Wilson often signed his letters with, "'devotedly yours' and shared his deepest thoughts and
08:17feelings with Peck."
08:18The affair became public knowledge during Wilson's first presidential campaign in 1912,
08:23when some of his letters were leaked to the press.
08:25His opponents tried to use the scandal against him, but it didn't significantly impact
08:29his campaign.
08:55Thomas Jefferson
08:57While technically not a White House affair, as the White House wasn't completed until
09:00after his presidency, Thomas Jefferson's relationship with Sally Hemings is one of
09:05the most controversial in presidential history.
09:07Hemings was an enslaved woman owned by Jefferson, and their relationship lasted decades, resulting
09:13in several children.
09:14The affair began when Hemings, who was the half-sister of Jefferson's late wife, accompanied
09:19Jefferson's daughter to Paris in 1787.
09:22Hemings was only 14 years old at the time while Jefferson was 44.
09:26Their sexual relationship is believed to have started in Paris and continued after
09:31their return to Monticello, Jefferson's Virginia plantation.
09:34For many years, historians debated the veracity of the relationship, but DNA testing in 1998
09:40confirmed that Jefferson was indeed the father of at least one of Hemings' children, and
09:45most historians now accept he fathered all six.
10:12Donald Trump
10:16While Donald Trump's alleged affairs primarily occurred before his presidency, they became
10:21a significant issue during his time in office.
10:23The most high-profile involved adult film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy
10:28model Karen McDougal.
10:29Daniels claims that she had a sexual encounter with Trump in 2006, shortly after the birth
10:34of his son with Melania Trump.
10:36The story became public in 2018 when it was revealed that Trump's lawyer, Michael Cohen,
10:41had paid Daniels $130,000 in hush money before the 2016 election.
10:46Similarly, McDougal alleged that she had a 10-month affair with Trump in 2006-2007.
10:52She sold her story to the National Enquirer for $150,000, but the tabloid, whose CEO was
10:57friendly with Trump, never published it, a practice known as catch-and-kill.
