Iran and Russia, which have been staunch supporters of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, would be wise to take a step back from Syria as they have other problems, former British envoy to Syria Henry Hogger says.

00:00There are these external influences, such as Russia, such as Iran, such as Hezbollah,
00:07that don't want to see this new leadership succeed.
00:10I mean, I'm just wondering what can be done to mitigate the chances of interference on
00:16their part?
00:17Well, the players that you're talking about are not ones that we in the West really have
00:22a great deal of leverage over, to be honest.
00:26I think as Iran, perhaps, there may be a bit of self-fulfillment in that they have taken
00:34such a battering with the, more or less, demise of Hezbollah and Hamas, at least militarily.
00:43So they've lost a lot of their stooges in the Arab world.
00:47If they've got, in a sense, that regime, which is, after all, under internal pressure too
00:51from dissident movements and so on, they'll draw their horns in a bit and stay back on
00:57the sidelines.
00:58And Russia too, I mean, they've had a bloody nose from all this because their protege in
01:05Damascus is now probably not a very welcome guest within their own country.
01:12And of course, they've got a lot of other things to worry about with Ukraine and their
01:17efforts to interfere now in other European countries.
