Britain's Labour government plans to pass legislation ending so-called no-fault evictions - requiring landlords to provide a reason in advance of evicting tenants and extending the required notice period to allow tenants more time to find alternate housing. No-fault evictions have existed since 1988 when Margaret Thatcher's government introduced them as part of a push to deregulate the rental market to attract more private landlords.

00:00We're really nice. It's quite farming-safe.
00:11Yes, I'm fine, thanks, but I don't understand you.
00:16Yeah, exactly. I don't have another home. This is my home.
00:45And whenever I move, I make it my home, but I never know how long I will be able to stay on that property.
00:51So it's always a bit of a balance, always in the back of my mind.
00:55I know I might have to move, but I've no control over when it will be.
00:59So I feel like this is my home until I find another one.
01:05And it's really hard to sort of plan my life in general.
01:10Specifically now, I know I have to move, but I don't know where I'm going to.
01:30I think it's fundamental that there should be no such thing as no-fault evictions.
01:35Everyone deserves to live in a home.
01:37I don't know how anyone thinks it's appropriate to increase rent by 53%.
01:41Absolutely everyone knows that that is an unethical move.
01:45My biggest problem right now is about market value and what market value can be agreed as.
02:07Yes, we've gone beyond a housing crisis into a housing emergency.
02:32It's something that's driving people into poverty, into debt and into homelessness every single day.
02:38There needs to be more protections from government for renters.
02:41We think that that needs quick action on affordability of rent,
02:46so limiting the amount that landlords can raise the rent while someone is a sitting tenant.
02:51But we also think that we really welcome the government's action to end these unfair no-fault evictions
02:58and also to drive up the quality of homes that are available to people as well.
