00:00You did good work tonight, Buffy.
00:02Thanks.
00:03And I got a little toy surprise.
00:05Welcome to MissMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most heartwarming
00:09episodes of television from sources we didn't expect.
00:12Well, I think I've had the nicest Christmas since the beginning of time.
00:1910. Geothermal Escapism
00:21Community
00:22You don't get it. No one gets our bed. I got them a little. This is my fault.
00:29Donald Glover's impending departure from Community left the show's writers with a
00:33near-impossible task. They had to write a send-off for Troy that felt both appropriate
00:38and satisfying.
00:40I don't want us to waste our chance to acknowledge how much we're going to miss you.
00:47As the episode begins, it seems as if the send-off will be a big, action-packed finale
00:52akin to the show's paintball wars in the first and second seasons.
00:56But by the end, it becomes clear that this is all just a cover-up for Abed's complicated feelings.
01:02It's not a game for me, Troy. I'm seeing real lava because you're leaving. It's embarrassing.
01:06I don't want to be crazy, but I am crazy, so I made a game that made you and everyone else
01:11see what I see.
01:12In a quirky yet moving scene, Britta helps the once inseparable pair clone themselves
01:17to better deal with the big life change, and Abed is finally able to let Troy go.
01:229. Right Where It Hurts
01:24Daria
01:25Daria isn't exactly a people person. In fact, she expresses her low esteem for humanity
01:31in her solo series' first episode.
01:33Don't worry. I don't have low self-esteem. It's a mistake.
01:37I'll say.
01:39I have low esteem for everyone else.
01:41Because of this, it's rare that she expresses any form of sentimentality,
01:45rare but not unheard of.
01:47After struggling to write a non-derivative story featuring people she knows,
01:51Daria turns to her mother for help.
01:53Helen suggests that she write about what she'd like to see from the world
01:56rather than what she already observes, which Daria takes to heart.
02:00If you really want to be honest, be truthful about what you'd like to happen.
02:04There's a challenge.
02:06When the hell did you learn so much about me?
02:08The misanthropic teen writes a uncharacteristically kind portrayal
02:12of her future relationship with her parents and sister,
02:15in which they all meet up for a family card game.
02:17It's so sweet that it moves her mother to tears, much to Daria's disappointment.
02:22Wow, so your story made your mother cry?
02:25Out of happiness. That's the sick part.
02:288. The Doctor Dances – Doctor Who
02:31Look at you, beaming away like your father Christmas.
02:34Who says I'm not Red Bicycle when you're 12?
02:36What?
02:37And everybody lives, Rose. Everybody lives!
02:40This two-part story from the first episode of Doctor Who's reboot starts out pretty grim.
02:45It's the middle of the London Blitz,
02:47and the Doctor has run into a woman who is being harassed
02:49by an unsettling child in a gas mask who she claims resembles her dead brother.
02:54Mommy? Are you in there, Mommy?
03:00Mommy?
03:02Fortunately, not all is as it appears.
03:05The Doctor solves the mystery, reunites the family,
03:07and appeals to the logic of some nanogenes.
03:10For once, everybody lives.
03:12Everybody lives, Rose. Just this once. Everybody lives!
03:21A few years later, Vincent and the Doctor would treat fans to another heartwarming ending
03:26in which the Doctor shows Vincent Van Gogh the impact his art will have in the years following his death.
03:327. Fish Out of Water – BoJack Horseman
03:36Many words can be used to describe BoJack Horseman.
03:39Cute typically isn't one of them.
03:41Fish, they're so annoying.
03:43Sorry lady, no abla fish talk.
03:46You need to be sensitive to their culture. Things are different down there.
03:50The adult animated series focuses on a washed-up equine sitcom star
03:54and frequently deals with heavy subjects such as abuse, addiction, and mental illness.
03:59But Fish Out of Water gave viewers a well-earned, if unexpected, reprieve from the darkness.
04:06The episode pairs the show's downtrodden title character with a bubbly newborn seahorse.
04:11In the largely dialogue-free episode, BoJack attempts to return the seahorse to his father
04:16in a colourful underwater world.
04:26Although the pair eventually part ways, there's a clearer hint that the show's ending
04:31Although the pair eventually part ways, there's a clearer affection between them
04:35that's uncharacteristically sweet for the series.
04:386. Bart Gets an F – The Simpsons
04:42After its first season, The Simpsons was already a pop culture phenomenon
04:47and at the centre of that success was the family's only son, Bart.
04:51To make him the focus of the second season's premiere must have been a no-brainer.
04:56In the episode, Bart is told that he will have to repeat the fourth grade
05:00if he doesn't get his grades up.
05:02He studies harder than ever before, just to get another F.
05:12The disappointment of failing to get his grades up
05:15and not being able to get his grades up
05:17is what makes this episode so special.
05:21Another year together, it's gonna be hell.
05:24The disappointment of failing after an honest attempt drives the kid to tears
05:28but an obscure historical reference and a sympathetic move from Mrs. Kraboppel
05:33winds up raising his F plus to a heaven sent D minus.
05:36You just demonstrated applied knowledge
05:39and due to the difficulty and relative obscurity of the reference
05:42you deserve an extra point on your exam.
05:44Hey, it's only fair.
05:46You mean I passed?
05:48Just barely.
05:49I passed!
05:50The Simpsons isn't typically sincere
05:52but this episode had its feeling for Bart.
05:58Okay, so this episode isn't all sunshine and rainbows.
06:01I don't get it.
06:02What kind of sicko wants to destroy the happiest night of a senior's life?
06:06I have my reasons.
06:08There's still monsters to fight
06:09and Angel ends up breaking things off with Buffy
06:12but it's nice to finally see some real appreciation for Sunnydale's favourite slayer.
06:16At Buffy's senior prom, one of her peers gets on stage
06:19to present her with a first-of-its-kind award
06:22Class Protector.
06:24It's from all of us
06:26and it has written here
06:28Buffy Summers
06:30Class Protector.
06:32It's a rare but very much deserved public acknowledgement
06:35of everything Buffy has been through to save her classmates and the town.
06:39It also shows just how much things have changed
06:41as students who once mocked Buffy for her strange interests
06:45now finally understand the importance of her knowledge and skills.
06:49I had no idea that children en masse could be gracious.
06:54Every now and then people surprise you.
06:57Number four, Leela's homeworld, Futurama.
07:00I told a whole crowd today that being an orphan made me strong
07:04but all I really wanted was a mom and dad
07:06to hold me and stroke my hair and tell me they love me.
07:10The competent yet self-conscious Leela grew up in an orphanage
07:14and we learn that she's desperate to connect to the birth parents she never knew.
07:17She initially believes herself to be an alien
07:20but this is revealed to be a ruse of her parents' making.
07:22You won't pass for human, cutie.
07:25But if my PhD in exolinguistics is worth diddly-poop
07:29this note should convince them you're an alien.
07:32Her mother and father are actually mutants
07:34but left her in the hope that it would afford her a better life.
07:37In a touching sequence, it is revealed that though they gave her up for adoption
07:41Leela's parents still loved her.
07:43It says your parents love you very much.
07:47We still do.
07:49So I'm not an alien? I'm a mutant?
07:52We never wanted you to know.
07:54From the shadows, they secretly helped Leela throughout her life
07:57leaving her gifts on her birthday and tucking her in when she was cold.
08:01Number three, long, long time, The Last of Us.
08:05I'm sorry.
08:08For what?
08:13Getting older faster than you.
08:15I like you older.
08:17Most of the time a faithful adaptation is considered a better adaptation
08:20but occasionally a writer can transform the source material for the better.
08:25So, who's the girl?
08:28The girl you're singing about?
08:33There is no girl.
08:35This was certainly the case for The Last of Us episode Long, Long Time
08:39which took the video game's reclusive paranoid character Bill
08:42and put him at the centre of a bittersweet love story that's only hinted at in the game.
08:46Although both Bill and his partner Frank end up deceased
08:49writer Craig Mazin hoped that the new ending felt more happy than sad.
08:54I'm old.
08:58I'm satisfied.
09:03And you were my purpose.
09:05This isn't just another tragedy.
09:07It's two people who shared several years of happiness together
09:10and chose to go out together.
09:12Number two, The Night of the Meek, The Twilight Zone.
09:16Art Carney plays an intoxicated but caring Santa
09:19in this 1960 Christmas tale from The Twilight Zone.
09:22No, please Santa Claus, a job for my daddy.
09:26Please, a big turkey for our Christmas dinner.
09:30After being fired from his job as a department store Saint Nick
09:33Corwin stumbles across a sack filled with presents.
09:36In true Twilight Zone fashion this isn't just a normal bag of gifts
09:40but a magic sack able to conjure up whatever someone may desire.
09:44Henry spends the night dispensing gifts to everyone around him.
09:47I want a toy please.
09:49A toy? Oh, I've got one here for you.
09:53You want a toy, I've got a baseball bat for you.
09:56Christmas stories were often more kind hearted than the average Twilight Zone story.
10:00This can also be seen in the holiday set Changing of the Guard
10:03where a teacher's death is prevented by the ghosts of his former students.
10:07That's why I brought this medal to show you Professor Fowler.
10:11Because it's partly yours.
10:14You taught me about courage. You taught me what it meant.
10:17Before we unveil our top pick here are a few honourable mentions.
10:20How the Ghosts Stole Christmas.
10:23The X-Files, an episode that's as heartening as it is frightening.
10:27I know we said that we weren't going to exchange gifts but I got you a little something.
10:36Mulder.
10:39Merry Christmas.
10:41Because You're My Sister.
10:43Parenthood, Christina celebrates life while Joel and Julia welcome a new family member.
10:48I promise to love you buddy.
10:50Yeah, no matter what.
10:53Me too.
10:55Okay.
10:57Okay.
10:58It's quite a family you're coming into.
11:01Who lives, who dies, who tells your story? Grey's Anatomy.
11:05Meredith Grey finally gets some recognition in the series' 300th episode.
11:10Without further ado, the Harper Avery for Surgical Innovation goes to
11:15Dr. Meredith Grey.

11:41Number 1. Death Takes a Holiday.
11:44MASH.
11:45Set in a medical camp during the Korean War, MASH is certainly a comedy but often a dark one.
11:51Sweet moments are few and far between, but the most heartwarming episodes often involve children.
11:56Thank you father, we are most grateful for your invitation.
11:59Oh, it is we who are in your debt.
12:01After all, what's Christmas without children?
12:03Hey, come on kids, it's party time.
12:06Letters fits this bill, featuring the protagonists responding to the letters of school children.
12:11But when it comes to tugging on our heartstrings, we think Death Takes a Holiday can't be topped.
12:17Set up two units of plasma.
12:18With four, it's a waste of time.
12:20Doctor, if there's no point.
12:21If we can delay it long enough, these kids won't have to think of Christmas as the day their daddy died.
12:26The Christmas set episode sees a truce called on the battlefield,
12:29and the doctors and nurses decide to throw a party for a group of young orphans.
12:33The episode's poignant ending really brings the bittersweet feels to the forefront.
12:38Time of death, 1205 December 26th.
12:43Falsify our record.
12:45Christmas should be thought of as a day of birth.
12:48Which of these episodes would be perfect for a rewatch?
12:50Let us know in the comments.
12:52It wasn't that bad.
12:54Stop, stop.
12:56This isn't a story, it's real life.
12:58Do you agree with our picks?
