00:00Basically, my father passed away when I was 15, my best friend, still with me in spirit.
00:11He taught me how to surf when I was 6 years old.
00:14That's when I realized that I needed to catch my own wave.
00:17I needed to have some sort of independence and be able to do that on my own.
00:20The summer of 2012 will forever be remembered as the best summer of our lives.
00:28We put out an open call to anybody with any disability.
00:32It didn't matter where you were from or what sport you were into.
00:36So we planned this trip to connect with like-minded people.
00:39It's really helping people understand that there are endless abilities.
00:47In the beginning, I really didn't know where my life would go.
00:49I kind of realized that I was probably going to be in a chair for the rest of my life.
00:53It hasn't been all sunshine and roses for you.
00:57There was no other reality except that I was helpless.
01:01I would get out of the shower and I would cry my eyes out.
01:04It was guys coming to my bedside and said,
01:06Hey, when you're ready, you will be able to golf and you will be able to ski
01:10and you will be able to cycle and rock climb and water ski and scuba dive and sail.
01:15For the first time ever, I saw people in racing wheelchairs, much like this one here, go whizzing by.
01:20And that was the first time that I realized that people with disabilities could go to college,
01:24could have families, could have dreams and jobs and goals.
01:28I just found out I really liked doing sports and being active.
01:33So it wasn't really about being athletic. It was about being independent and just doing stuff for myself.
01:37Through sports, through activities, you'll see that we're much more alike and we are different.
01:42Over and over and over again, disabled athletes are proving that they're able to achieve things that no one would have dreamed that were possible.
01:49I read about Jesse Blower in a magazine.
01:52You know, this guy's paralyzed from here down.
01:56That to me is pretty impressive.
01:58And I said that if that guy can do it with that disability, there's no reason why I can't be surfing with my disability.
02:04Now that we're doing this project, our goal is to get out there and to let him know that he's the reason why I am who I am.
02:14Jesse, what's up, man?
02:16So we're going to surf Malibu on the 20th.
02:18Dude, I'm really looking forward to it, dude.
02:20You've been on my radar ever since I first got hurt, so it'll be cool.
02:24No doubt.
02:27That guy's totally awesome.
02:30He's totally awesome, dude.
02:34We just ran out of gas.
02:35We're going to breakfast in the desert.
02:38We just blew out a tire on the highway.
02:40Let's go, Big E.
02:44We're a little bit far away from home right now.
02:49These are my three best friends.
02:51This is the bus we lived in for 40 days.
02:53And this is the story of the people we met on the most incredible journey of our lives.
03:19We're a little bit far away from home right now.
03:21This is the story of the people we met on the most incredible journey of our lives.
