The Musée du Louvre-Lens, which opened in December 2012, is located in the small mining town of Lens, which, with around 30,000 inhabitants, is situated in the middle of the mining region of Nord-Pas de Calais.
The Galerie du Temps is the centerpiece of the Louvre-Lens. It houses more than 200 masterpieces from the Louvre collections, spectacularly displayed over an area of 3,000 m². Here you can take a unique journey through the history of art, from the invention of writing in Mesopotamia in the 4th millennium BC to the Industrial Revolution in the mid-19th century. The installation, which is both chronological and multidisciplinary, creates a dialogue between epochs, techniques and civilizations.

00:00The city is located at the southern end of a coal deposit that stretches from the Ruhr
00:21region through Saarland and Belgium to the north of France.
00:25The city has the same fate as the regions to the north of it.
00:29The economic basis provided by mining and the steel industry no longer exists and the
00:33social situation of the population is becoming difficult.
00:37Culture is stepping into this gap.
00:39In December 2012, the first branch of the Louvre outside Paris opens its doors.
00:45In the north, out of all places, against the resistance of so many sceptics.
00:59I am delighted to bring the collections of the Louvre Museum, which are behind me,
01:05the collections closest to the inhabitants.
01:08This Louvre-Lens Museum is a Louvre in a different way.
01:12It is a new, innovative way, closest to the expectations of visitors, to show,
01:20to present, to share the collections of the Louvre, but also temporary exhibitions.
01:28Here at the Galerie du Temps, 250 artifacts from the 200-year-old institution of Paris are on display.
01:35Each year, one-third of the works are replaced and rearranged, still chronologically,
01:40but arranged by theme so that the pieces enter into a dialogue.
01:44So I discover the Louvre pleasantly different, visually without barriers through the large glass surfaces,
02:02step unhindered in front of the works of art of international rank and admire their beauty and perfect form.
02:14Finally, I take a look at the model of the coal mine where today this museum resides.
