00:00When Adam and Danielle Busby became the parents of the first surviving set of quintuplet girls
00:05in the U.S. in 2015, the family landed its very own reality show, OutDaughtered, on TLC.
00:12Starring Adam and Danielle, their older daughter Blake, and the quints Olivia Marie, Ava Lane,
00:17Hazel Grace, Parker Kate, and Riley Page.
00:20Anyone would have a hard time taking care of so many babies at once, but the Busbys
00:23made it look simple.
00:24And just how do they do it?
00:26This is the untold truth of OutDaughtered.
00:29A Target love story
00:31The Busby family got its start when Danielle and Adam met as co-workers at Target.
00:35They knew each other for months before Adam worked up the courage to talk to Danielle.
00:39But according to her, their first date never happened because Adam hung out with his friends
00:43instead.
00:44Danielle later wrote on the family's blog,
00:46"'At this point I'm thinking, this guy, who does he think he is, ditching me?
00:50I'm done with him.'"
00:51Fortunately, Danielle gave Adam a second chance.
00:53After two and a half years of dating, Adam surprised her with a proposal, and they were
00:57married six months later.
00:58"'We're so perfect together, and even through the good times and the bad, I wouldn't want
01:03anyone else by my side.'"
01:06Eating for six
01:07Growing quintuplets means that you have to eat a lot.
01:11Danielle told Fit Pregnancy that she sometimes ate an astonishing 4,500 calories a day.
01:16Fortunately, Danielle managed to avoid pregnancy cravings, saying,
01:19"'I had not one craving ever because I worked with a dietician and I was able to eat pretty
01:24much whatever I wanted to just fill up that allowance, especially ice cream shakes.'"
01:31All in
01:32The Busbys got more than they hoped for when fertility treatments resulted in Danielle
01:36conceiving five babies at once.
01:38"'You realize it's the next 18 years that you're responsible for five lives.
01:42It's overwhelming.'"
01:43But the couple rose to the challenge, in spite of doctors' concerns.
01:47Danielle told KTRK News,
01:48"'At first they didn't want us to have all five, but our hearts just couldn't do that.'"
01:52The girls were delivered by C-section at 28 weeks and two days, and according to Adam
01:56and Danielle, their quints are a miracle.
01:59They told KTRK it was their faith that pulled them through.
02:03First touch
02:05The Busby quints spent a couple of months in the hospital after they were born, and
02:09Danielle and Adam had to wait a whole week before ever holding them.
02:12Danielle told Today,
02:13"'It's been hard to see your baby in, you know, the isolettes, but that moment where
02:18you finally get to touch your baby and hold him, it's, there's no better feeling than
02:22that.'"
02:23Postpartum depression
02:24Adam's postpartum depression.
02:25"'I'm not used to this.
02:26I want you to know whatever you're going through, like, I'm here to listen or talk.'"
02:33Showcasing how PPD can also affect men, Adam opened up about his struggles with depression
02:38after Danielle had the quints.
02:40"'And he was hiding from it, hiding it from himself because he didn't want to face it.'"
02:46Adam said,
02:47"'This is a very real struggle that dads all around the world go through, yet you rarely
02:50ever hear it talked about.'"
02:52Adam hoped that by talking about his depression on the show, more people would learn how postpartum
02:56depression can affect men.
02:57"'Like this, like, pounding, like, weight in my chest.'"
03:02He said,
03:03"'I'd be doing an extreme disservice to our fans if I hid this from the public and wasn't
03:07honest with them.'"
03:08Making ends meet
03:11When Danielle became pregnant with the quints, they agreed she would quit her full-time job,
03:15leaving Adam as the main breadwinner, while Danielle stayed home with the girls.
03:19"'How are we gonna really afford being on one income as far as, you know, four years'
03:23worth of college?
03:24You're looking at almost $2 million.'"
03:27She told People just how they do it, saying,
03:29"'We budget and we do what we can to make ends meet and make it work.
03:33God has always provided, no matter what the situation.
03:36He's protecting and guiding us and providing, and that's how we've done it.'"
03:39The money they make from OutDaughtered also goes toward providing for their family.
03:43While their salary is kept secret, it's estimated that they could make up to a million dollars
03:47per season.
03:50Mr. Mom
03:51Since he's, well, OutDaughtered, Adam has had to learn more about fashion and girls'
03:55hairstyles than he ever expected.
03:57"'When you're in a house full of girls, you gotta do what you gotta do.'"
04:01He told Parade,
04:02"'Usually, the mom takes on stuff like fixing hair, picking out outfits, and matching hair
04:06bows with outfits for the girls.
04:08When you have six of them, you find yourself right in the middle of that.
04:11I'm better with a round brush than Danielle."
04:13Adam is also very conscious about being a role model for his daughters, saying,
04:16"'It's a huge responsibility being a dad of a little girl, instilling confidence in her
04:21and truly showing her how her future husband, her future boyfriend, should treat her, and
04:25teaching her not to accept anything less than that.
04:28That's my mindset every day.'"
04:31Danielle's at-home workout
04:33Since she doesn't have much time to hit the gym, Danielle got back in shape by working
04:37out at home.
04:38"'It's kind of like, you know, you find time to eat, you find time to sleep, well, I try
04:42to find time to get some fitness in every day.'"
04:45She wrote,
04:46"'To build strength, I do sit-ups and push-ups every day.
04:48And forget about the Stairmaster, I utilize our staircase for daily workouts too, on top
04:53of the workout I get bringing five babies up and down the stairs all day.'"
04:57And pushing her kids in the stroller also counts.
04:59Danielle said that the total weight of the six-seat stroller and the babies is around
05:03200 pounds.
05:06Will they try for a boy?
05:08Some couples might want to try to have at least one boy, but these outdaughtered parents
05:12say they're done having kids.
05:14In an interview with KPLC a few months after the girls were born, Adams said,
05:18"'Our family is complete.
05:20All girls, not trying for a boy.
05:22So it's over.
05:23The shop is closed.'"
05:24Well, we can all agree that the Busby family is pretty perfect as it is.
