00:00Prison. The word that we fear the most.
00:09But do you believe that inside this prison, instead of being painful, people are suffering?
00:21We met Tatay Mooks, a 66-year-old PDL, or person deprived of liberty,
00:28from Metro Manila District Jail in Taguig.
00:33In 2022, Tatay Mooks was jailed for smuggling.
00:37He only finished elementary school.
00:39And his past life was as a carpenter.
00:44So he was very surprised when suddenly one day,
00:48someone filed a suit against him.
00:50Tatay faced the charges,
00:52and denied that he was the general manager of a smuggling case of illegal substances.
01:13Two months later, he was transferred to Metro Manila District Jail in Taguig.
01:19And this is where he served as Tatay Tatayan to the younger PDLs.
01:25He was one of the respected PDLs.
01:28Because he was one of our older PDLs, he was listened to by other PDLs.
01:33I have not yet seen him board our PDLs disciplinary board that has violations.
01:40So his behavior was good, what he was doing inside the jail.
01:45Tatay Mooks spent two years in prison while his case was still on trial.
01:52Although he was limited in what he could do inside the jail,
01:55he was still thankful for the little freedom he experienced.
02:10Tatay Mooks left his wife and children at their house.
02:15And because his house was far away, they were not always able to travel.
02:19His only dream was to be released from prison so that his family can be reunited.
02:25Especially his youngest son who has special needs.
02:29He always cried to me, asking me to be nice to him.
02:32He said that he knows that I went on vacation.
02:35I asked him, when will your vacation end?
02:37He said, it's almost over.
02:39I said, I want to hug you.
02:43He prayed that his son will be reunited before everything is over.
02:48But because of his age, Tatay Mooks also experienced bad things.
02:54Like his blurry vision.
02:56Our case with Tatay Mooks is called Teridium.
03:00In layman's term, it's called foggy vision.
03:03Usually, it's an irritation in the eyes that causes blurry vision.
03:08It can be UV radiation from the sun or wind or air.
03:13Aside from Teridium, we also saw a cataract on both eyes.
03:17Because it's inside a cage,
03:19he didn't expect that his eyes will be fixed.
03:25But the good news is,
03:26the police who are taking care of their PDLs,
03:29they have good food to give to the prisoners in need.
03:35Food, free haircut, or even a bigger request,
03:40they are trying their best to give.
03:42Our latest case, we conducted a BJMP fan run for a cause.
03:475, 4, 3, 2, 1.
03:58This process is a big medical help to our two PDLs.
04:03Aside from the fan run,
04:05they are also accepting an art commission
04:08where they are being paid for the cases of PDLs.
04:13We have a project called Likhalaya Project
04:15where our PDLs or those who are imprisoned here in Piitan,
04:19there are arts that are being made through painting.
04:23And from here, we can use the earnings of the painting
04:26to free qualified PDLs.
04:29The initiative of their station was led by their warden, Jose.
04:34And they just started this this year.
04:37In BJMP, we are directly affected by our PDLs.
04:41That's why it's different for every PDL
04:44to be able to help or change the former PDLs.
04:48It has a different impact on us when we go back.
04:50We are thankful.
04:51We have a new life.
04:53That's what a PDL officer can't afford.
04:56And this month, who will be the next beneficiary?
05:00It's Tatay Mooks.
05:02First of all, he doesn't have any infractions in our prison.
05:06So he has a good record.
05:08Second, he is familiar with our senior citizens of PDLs.
05:13Third, we saw his need to have his eyes treated
05:19so that he can clearly see his family visiting him.
05:24We are here in San Juan.
05:25And today, Tatay has a schedule for his surgery.
05:30For the expected reunion,
05:32join us in following Tatay's eye operation.
05:39Hello, ma'am.
05:40Do you want to say goodbye?
05:41Yes, ma'am.
05:42He will have his surgery.
05:43And of course, before the operation,
05:45this is the clear gift of good news for Tatay.
05:50The online reunion from his family
05:53to reduce his anxiety.
05:56After the operation, where will they bring you?
05:59Just there. We will go back there.
06:01You will go back there?
06:03Yes.
06:04We will still be able to talk to you.
06:05Yes.
06:06I love you.
06:07I love you, too.
06:09I love you, too.
06:12Don't run away. Wait for me.
06:15Okay.
06:16I will wait for you to come back.
06:18Okay.
06:21Tatay's eyes are being examined.
06:24Our definitive management is
06:26the region excision or removal of the eyebrow.
06:31We usually put a graft so that it won't grow back.
06:36After this, they started disinfecting
06:39Tatay Mook's entire face and eyes
06:42before he went straight to the operating room.
06:50And after an hour,
06:54the operation was a success.
06:56The first week, we were strict
06:59that every two hours, we will put a graft.
07:02This is a big thing for Tatay Mook.
07:05While he is waiting for his next hearing,
07:08he just wants to see his family clearly
07:12when they go out.
07:14It's enough to give him hope.
07:17Tatay Mook has a special child
07:21who is very close to him.
07:23I want them to see each other more clearly
07:26in the short time that they are visiting
07:28inside our prison.
07:29That is the best feeling
07:31when we receive a gift.
07:33He doesn't ask for it.
07:38He is so good at seeing things clearly.
07:41Who else could it be?
07:43His family misses him so much.
07:45Thank you so much.
07:47If you don't help, it will be hard for us.
07:52In life, let's not lose hope.
07:55Because every passing of time
07:58brings us to a clearer tomorrow.
