00:00There has been a catastrophic rise in deaths caused solely by alcohol in England over the
00:06past four years, government figures suggest.
00:10More than 8,200 people have died because of alcohol in 2023, which is a 42% rise from
00:162019's figures.
00:18Because of this, the Alcohol Help Alliant UK says alcohol consumption could be reduced
00:22if a minimum price for each unit was introduced, as in Scotland.
00:28The government says it's unacceptable that alcohol deaths are at record high levels and
00:31it will prioritise public health in its 10-year plan for the NHS in England.
00:36Even more shockingly, the North East had the highest rates of deaths caused by alcohol
00:39than anywhere else in England.
00:42During the pandemic, deaths caused by alcohol significantly rose across the UK and have
00:46slowly continued to go up.
00:50According to recent reports, there has been a 57% rise in the number of people dying from
00:54alcohol-related illnesses in the North East since 2019.
00:58County Durham-based Traverty Balance said despite two-thirds of people in the North
01:02East taking steps to cut down, health issues due to alcohol remained historically high.
01:07She has called for proper regulation of alcohol marketing, clearer alcohol labelling and a
01:13minimum price for a unit of alcohol.
01:16Dr James Crosby, a GP and consultant with Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust
01:22and clinical lead for alcohol for the North East and Cumbria, has said
01:26Alcohol can harm the body in a lot of ways.
01:28In the short term, there are dangers of binge drinking and antisocial behaviour, but heavy
01:32drinking can also quite quickly cause severe diseases of the liver and pancreas.
01:40In the longer term, we see other health risks including brain damage, increased chance of
01:44at least seven types of cancer, heart disease and stroke.
01:49While it's very easy to overindulge over the Christmas time, make sure you drink carefully,
01:53know your limits, take care and check in on your friends and family.
