00:00With high food prices, half of all Canadians admit to consuming things even though they were unsure if they were safe to eat.
00:07But it's worth noting that every year, more than 4 million Canadians get sick from eating contaminated food.
00:14Almost 12,000 of those people end up in hospitals, and about 240 die.
00:20Whether you're hosting a large gathering or serving a solo supper, you want to ensure your food is handled and prepared properly so no one gets food poisoning.
00:28Health Canada recommends four key food safety steps.
00:32The first is to wash your hands and all work surfaces, and to rinse all veggies and fruits before chopping them.
00:39Use separate cutting boards for fresh produce and raw meat, poultry, fish and seafood.
00:44Next, use a digital food thermometer to check the meat and other foods have reached safe internal temperatures.
00:51Finally, refrigerate or freeze leftovers within two hours after your meal.
