00:00Single-use plastics pollution is growing at an alarming rate a movement created to clean up the environment from single-use

00:08Plastics faces an uphill battle, but its members are dug in and determined as we listen to this VOA feature report

00:18Trace supermarket in Vienna, Virginia near Washington has everything a shopper needs except containers

00:25That's right, no bags

00:27No boxes, no bottles if you want to bring something home even liquids like cooking oil or shampoo. You need to come prepared

00:35Visitors bring their own containers and weigh them fill up what they need and then buy their goods by weight

00:41I got the idea to open the store

00:44Gosh, it's like 2018. So how many you're sick almost six years ago

00:48I got tired of seeing so much garbage and plastic and trash like single-use coffee cups like

01:31Bottle shopping at a refill store might not be as easy as a full-service store at first

01:36But customer says it gives them a sense of accomplishment

01:42You're doing your little bit for the environment and the staff are very friendly and helpful and and they're very much into

01:49Doing for the planet and the environment as well

01:52So yeah, it feels good in Tacoma Park in Maryland another refill and zero-waste store called

01:58Fulfillory even offers their own self-made products

02:01One of them is an all-purpose cleaning tablet made from recycled cooking oil

02:11If you cut it up add water

02:14And it becomes a really great cleaner. It cleans granite. It cleans wood

02:18Saha opened the store four years ago

02:20She says changing consumer behavior no matter how small is key to reducing waste

02:26If the only thing they could do is carry around a reusable straw that's still saving almost 500 stars a year, right?

02:33We just hope that people try to stop where they can

02:36According to the advocacy organization the US Public Interest Research Group

02:40There are about 1,300 stores in the US with a zero-waste concept and this number is growing

02:47Around half are refill stores and others are stores that have a large selection of refillable items
