00:00How Brett Favre is going to be able to handle this, I have no idea.
00:04Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we'll be looking at the most notable sports teams and
00:10individual athletes who overcame personal tragedies to deliver remarkable performances.
00:16I knew that he would want me to go back to the racetrack, and I didn't, I mean instantly
00:22I didn't want to go, I didn't want to race cars anymore.
00:24Martin Saint-Louis, the death of a mother is a profound loss that can leave anyone shattered.
00:31Canadian ice hockey player Martin Saint-Louis experienced this in May 2014 when he lost
00:37his mom suddenly to a heart attack.
00:39Martin Saint-Louis found out yesterday when the team landed in Pittsburgh that his mother
00:44passed away.
00:45He immediately went home to Montreal to be with his family, but he was back today at
00:493.30 getting ready for this game.
00:51At the time, Saint-Louis was an undrafted player for the New York Rangers and was scheduled
00:56to face the Pittsburgh Penguins just three days later.
01:00After speaking with his father, he chose to play, on Mother's Day no less.
01:05With both his father and sister in the stands, Saint-Louis inspired his team by scoring their
01:10first goal, which ignited the crowd to chant his name.
01:23Ultimately, the Rangers won 3-1, pushing the series to Game 7 and eventually reaching the
01:29Stanley Cup Finals.
01:30It was a tough couple of days for my family, but you know, I know deep down my mother would,
01:40my mom would want me to play this game.
01:42Torrey Smith.
01:43Less than a day before the Baltimore Ravens were set to play against the New England Patriots
01:48in September 2012, wide receiver Torrey Smith got some devastating news.
02:07His younger brother, Tevin Jones, had died in a motorcycle accident.
02:12However, Smith rushed to be with his family, unsure whether he could still play.
02:17However, he became convinced after his mother reminded him that Tevin would have wanted
02:22him to.
02:30But Smith didn't just play, he delivered an outstanding performance.
02:35The second-year pro caught six passes for 127 yards and scored two touchdowns, leading
02:40the Ravens to a 31-30 victory.
02:43It was a powerful display from a man who, even in his grief, found strength in the unwavering
02:49support from his football family.
03:02New Orleans Saints.
03:04Hurricane Katrina's impact on New Orleans, Louisiana was immense, touching every corner
03:09of the city, including its football team, the New Orleans Saints.
03:21The storm severely damaged the Louisiana Superdome, forcing the Saints to play their entire 2005
03:27NFL regular season away from home.
03:29By fall 2006, the Saints returned to the Superdome, determined to uplift their city
03:35after such devastation.
03:41In their first home game, they triumphed over the Atlanta Falcons with a decisive 23-3 victory,
03:47kicking off their most successful season up until that point.
03:51This was a stunning turnaround for a team once deemed among the NFL's worst.
03:56Their momentum carried on until the 2009 season, when they made their first-ever Super
04:00Bowl appearance, and ultimately won.
04:13Miami Marlins.
04:15One week before the 2016 baseball season wrapped up, the Miami Marlins lost their star pitcher,
04:20Jose Fernandez, in a boating accident.
04:33The team canceled their game that day, but returned the next day to face the New York
04:37Mets, all wearing Fernandez's number 16 jersey.
04:41The game began with a touching gesture as Dee Gordon, typically a left-handed batter,
04:46took a right-handed stance in Fernandez's honor.
05:03He then switched back and hit his first home run of the season, leading his team to a 7-3
05:08victory.
05:09Gordon was overcome with emotion and broke into tears.
05:12A similar rallying moment occurred with the Los Angeles Angels, who went on to win the
05:172009 American League West shortly after losing their starting pitcher, Nick Adenhart.
05:35Sachin Tendulkar.
05:37India's 1999 Cricket World Cup campaign started disastrously with a loss to South Africa in
05:42their opening game.
05:55The team hoped to get back on track in their next match against Zimbabwe, but the night
05:59before, star batter Sachin Tendulkar received the devastating news that his father had passed
06:05away.
06:06Tendulkar returned home for the funeral, missing the Zimbabwe match, which ended in another
06:11defeat for India.
06:22Just days later, Tendulkar returned to Bristol, in time for the crucial playoff against Kenya.
06:28If India lost this game, they would be eliminated.
06:31Despite his overwhelming grief, Tendulkar pulled off an impressive play, scoring an
06:36emotional century against Kenya to keep India in the tournament.
06:43He dedicated the century to his father's memory.
06:55Ana Fidelia Quirote.
06:57One of Cuba's most renowned athletes, Ana Fidelia Quirote dominated the 800m race, winning
07:03bronze at the 1992 Olympic Games.
07:19The following year, however, Quirote was involved in a domestic accident that nearly ended her
07:24career and her life.
07:26While she was seven months pregnant, a kerosene stove exploded in her home, inflicting severe
07:31burns on over one-third of her body.
07:33The accident forced an early delivery, but unfortunately, her baby passed away after
07:38one week.
07:40Nevertheless, Quirote fought her way back through recovery and within months, she was
07:44back on the track, clinching a silver medal at the Central American Games in late 1993.
07:50By 1995, she had cemented her comeback with a gold medal at the World Championships in
07:56Gothenburg.
07:58At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Nigerian track and field star Gloria Elosi was the
08:14favorite to win the women's high hurdles.
08:17Elosi had traveled to Australia with her fiancé, Aguinis Anugoh, a relay alternate for the
08:23Nigerian men's team.
08:25It was an experience I really don't like talking about because it makes me go emotional and
08:33it was really difficult.
08:34However, just days before the opening ceremony, while Elosi was in Japan for a final test,
08:40Anugoh was tragically struck by a car and killed instantly.
08:45This loss was tremendous for Elosi.
08:47She went days without eating or sleeping and even considered dropping out of the Olympics.
08:52I was not able to train, sleepless nights, lots of distractions and those things I think
09:01they really affected my performance.
09:03Yet within days, she managed to regain her form, blazing through her heat rounds and
09:09ultimately securing a silver medal in the hurdles.
09:12Considering the immense tragedy she had endured, her achievement was nothing short of remarkable.
09:18Pete Sampras
09:19In 1995, Pete Sampras entered the Australian Open as the number one tennis player in the
09:25world.
09:26In the quarterfinals, he faced fellow American Jim Currier and was favored to win.
09:31Sampras faced his friend and on-court rival, two-time champion Jim Currier.
09:36However, Sampras was struggling emotionally as his longtime coach and friend Tim Gullickson
09:41had fallen seriously ill and was rushed back to the US for treatment.
09:46Gullickson would later be diagnosed with brain cancer, which he succumbed to in 1996.
09:52During his match against Currier, Sampras was visibly affected by his coach's condition.
09:57His emotions erupted when a fan shouted, do it for your coach, which caused him to break
10:02down in tears.
10:03Although Currier offered to postpone the game, Sampras opted to continue and ultimately defeated
10:09He's got it!
10:12The crowd had gone absolutely berserk here.
10:18New York Mets
10:20By the time the New York Mets faced the Atlanta Braves on September 21, 2001, the city was
10:26still reeling from the terrorist attacks just 10 days earlier.
10:30It was a Friday and the Mets were playing the Braves in the midst of a pennant race.
10:35The night would be unlike any other the players and their fans ever experienced.
10:40This game marked the return of baseball, and sports in general, to New York and became
10:45a powerful moment for the grieving city.
10:47In the 8th inning, the Mets came from behind when Mike Piazza delivered a two-run homer,
10:52lifting the team to a 3-2 victory.
10:55And it's a deep to left center, Andrew Jones on the run, this one has a chance, homerun!
11:01Mike Piazza and the Mets lead 3-2!
11:04The incredible shot not only won the game, it also offered a brief but profound relief
11:10that New Yorkers desperately needed.
11:12That same spirit of resilience was present in Boston when the Red Sox secured a 4-3 win
11:17over the Kansas City Royals just days after the 2013 marathon bombing.
11:22Drew will go to first base, and the Red Sox are in!
11:26The Sox have won seven straight, but this one at home at Fenway Park was important.
11:33In April 2017, Boston Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas faced a heart-wrenching challenge
11:39just before the NBA playoffs.
11:42One day before their game against the Chicago Bulls, Thomas learned that his younger sister
11:46Chyna had died in a car accident.
11:49Isaiah Thomas consoled by his close friend Avery Bradley, still trying to cope with the
11:54tragic loss of his 22-year-old sister Chyna just yesterday.
11:59The loss certainly wasn't easy.
12:01Hours before the game, he was seen in tears as his teammates tried to comfort him.
12:06But remarkably, Thomas decided to join them on the court, delivering a stellar performance
12:11with 33 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds.
12:16And he did that while wearing sneakers marked with messages like R.I.P.
12:20Lil Sis and I love you.
12:22Although the Celtics lost 106-102, Thomas' ability to play through such immense personal
12:28pain won the admiration of fans everywhere.
12:32I'm just taking it day by day.
12:34Some days are better than others, but I'm not here, man.
12:40It's never going to be the same.
12:43Brett Favre
12:44While playing in high school, former NFL quarterback Brett Favre was coached by his father, Irvin,
12:50who essentially shaped his formative years.
12:53Irvin remained an important figure in Favre's life until December 21, 2003, when he tragically
12:59died of a heart attack while driving.
13:01The most difficult start of Brett Favre's illustrious career.
13:05The following day, Favre's team, the Green Bay Packers, was scheduled to play against
13:10the Oakland Raiders in a Monday night football game.
13:13After much consideration, Favre chose to take the field.
13:17What followed became one of the most memorable performances of his career.
13:21Favre threw for 399 total yards and 4 touchdowns, leading the Packers to a decisive 41-7 victory.
13:29This night will be remembered for Brett Favre.
13:32Period.
13:33His gameplay was so good, he received a standing ovation from Raiders fans and later won an
13:39ESPY award.
13:40Dale Earnhardt Jr.
13:42The 2001 Pepsi 400 at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida was a profoundly significant
13:48race for Dale Earnhardt Jr.
13:50Just five months earlier, his father, the legendary Dale Earnhardt Sr., died in a crash
13:56on the same track during the Daytona 500.
13:59I love to watch that race and I love that people appreciate it.
14:02I love when it's acknowledged and celebrated.
14:06For me, it might be my fondest moment as a race car driver.
14:12In fact, the Pepsi 400 was the first race in the Daytona International Speedway since
14:17the tragic accident.
14:19So at least emotionally, Earnhardt Jr. had a lot to prove.
14:23On that hot July day, Earnhardt Jr. pulled through, delivering a remarkable victory in
14:28the Pepsi 400 before thousands.
14:31The win was symbolic, not just for him personally, but also for NASCAR fans, who saw it as a
14:37tribute to the legacy of his father.
14:40It was nice to be able to go there and had all this anger and frustration and sadness
14:45built up.
14:46It was good to release it with a smile and with happiness and joy.
14:52We finally had something to celebrate and be happy about.

15:11Marshall Thundering Herd Football Team
15:14On November 14, 1970, Southern Airways Flight 932 was carrying most of the Marshall University
15:20Thundering Herd football team from North Carolina to West Virginia.
15:25Tragically, the plane crashed shortly before landing, killing everyone on board, including
15:3037 players, 8 coaching staff and 25 boosters.
15:35Devastated but determined, the team began to rebuild under the guidance of new coach
15:40Jack Lengel, combining the remaining players with a host of new recruits.
15:45After a tough loss in their first away game, the Thundering Herd bounced back in their
15:49home opener against Xavier University, scoring a last-second touchdown to secure a narrow
15:5415-13 win.
16:03It was undoubtedly an emotional victory that helped them honor their fallen teammates.

16:19The Mets and the Marlins all met on the diamond and shared an embrace.
16:25A very extraordinary moment here at Marlins Park.
