Getting the horse early on in Elden Ring.
To unlock the Elden Ring horse - known formally as the Torrent the Spectral Steed - and summon it at will, players will have to do a little bit of swordplay and exploration first. Getting Torrent quickly is vital though - access to the steed will allow you to easily traverse the Lands Between of Elden Ring by dashing across the landscape, scaling steep terrain, and providing an edge in certain combat encounters. Here's exactly how you can get Torrent the Elden Ring horse, as well as all the advantages and abilities that come with mounted combat.

00:06To unlock the Elden Ring Horse, Torrent, the Spectral Steed, to his friends,
00:09you will unfortunately have to do a little bit of work.
00:11Not too much, though, and it'll be worth it,
00:13because your steed will allow you to easily run around a landscape,
00:16scale steep terrain, and provide an edge in some combat encounters.
00:20So, if that sounds useful to you, here's how to get Torrent, the Elden Ring Horse,
00:23as well as all the advantages that come with it.
00:25You can unlock Torrent, the Spectral Steed, by visiting three Sites of Grace.
00:29These are the glowing bonfire-like checkpoints in Elden Ring.
00:32Most players will unlock Torrent once they hit the Site of Grace at the Gatefront Ruins,
00:36but this is mainly a coincidence because of where you're directed in the first few hours.
00:40All you actually need to do is find any three Sites of Grace,
00:43and after resting at the third one, you'll be visited by an NPC called Melina.
00:47Melina will make you an offer, and if you accept it,
00:49she will then give you an item called the Spectral Steed Whistle,
00:52which you can equip to summon Torrent at any time.
00:55It's listed in your key items and can be equipped as a quick item, like your flasks.
00:59You can also slot it into the extra storage pouches if, for some reason, you don't want instant access.
01:04With the Whistle equipped, press X or Square to use it
01:07and instantly summon or de-summon Torrent, the Horse, beneath you.
01:10You can also quickly hop off and de-summon Torrent by clicking the left stick.
01:13Torrent, the Spectral Steed, basically lets you get around a lot faster,
01:16while slightly limiting what you can do while you're on it.
01:19You can switch to a Gallop and Double Jump,
01:21making it great for clearing obstacles or getting past enemies you don't want to fight,
01:24and you can still use items like flasks.
01:26However, being a large, fast-moving horse...thing
01:29means that Torrent is more unwieldy and less precise in its movements,
01:32so you'll find yourself riding in wide circles
01:34and having to perform strafing runs to attack your enemies.
01:37Players also can't use weapons, skills, block or other behaviours while mounted,
01:41although you can still attack with the shoulder buttons
01:43directing light and heavy attacks on the left and right sides respectively.
01:47It's worth noting that Torrent is not immortal
01:49and can be killed both by enemy attacks and extreme fall damage,
01:52although you can heal it by feeding them food items.
01:55If it is killed, Torrent will fade out of existence
01:57but can instantly be summoned again using the whistle.
01:59And that's all you need to know about getting and using Torrent,
02:02Elden Ring's weird ghost horse.
