00:03In 2024, the world said goodbye to dozens of shining stars in entertainment.
00:08Access Hollywood is looking back at just some of the many celebrities we lost this year.
00:12A big loss came on October 16th with the passing of Liam Payne at the age of 31.
00:17The Teardrop singer died after falling from the balcony of his hotel room in Argentina.
00:21The tragedy was mourned across the world, including by his One Direction bandmates.
00:25In tributes on social media, Harry Styles remembered Liam for having, quote,
00:29an energy for life that was infectious, while Niall Horan called him, quote,
00:33the brightest in every room.
00:34Zayn Malik told his late friend that he, quote, loved and respected him dearly,
00:38while Louis Tomlinson promised to be an uncle to Liam's son, Bear, and, quote,
00:42tell him stories of how amazing his dad was.
00:45The world lost Shannen Doherty on July 13th, following a years-long cancer battle.
00:49The actress starred in Charmed, Heathers, and perhaps most notably, Beverly Hills 90210.
00:55Her 90210 family honored her on social media following her death,
00:58with Jenny Garth calling Shannen, quote, one of the strongest people she has ever known.
01:02Tori Spelling remembered her friend as someone who, quote, was a rebel in an era
01:05when most women didn't feel comfortable being strong.
01:08And when Tori joined Dancing with the Stars later this year,
01:11she said she was stepping into her own strength for Shannen.
01:14I believe that she would want me to turn my power on.
01:18She kept telling me, like, you have it in you.
01:22She would say it's time you turn your power on now.
01:24On September 27th, stage and screen legend Dame Maggie Smith died at the age of 89.
01:30The actress was known for her Oscar-winning roles in The Prime of Miss Jean Brody
01:33and California Suite, as well as fan-favorite performances in Downton Abbey and Harry Potter.
01:38Daniel Radcliffe acted with her on the Harry Potter film series for a decade.
01:42He shared in part after her passing,
01:43she was a fierce intellect, a gloriously sharp tongue,
01:46could intimidate and charm in the same instant,
01:48and was, as everyone will tell you, extremely funny.
01:51I will always consider myself amazingly lucky to have been able to work with her
01:55and to spend time around her on set.
01:57On September 9th, James Earl Jones passed away at the age of 93.
02:01The legendary actor was known for his resonant voice and many iconic film roles,
02:05notably voicing Mufasa in The Lion King and Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy.
02:10He also memorably starred in Field of Dreams, The Sandlot, and Doctor Strangelove,
02:14among other movies.
02:15James made a lasting impression on his co-stars over the years,
02:18as well as all who encountered him.
02:20After his passing, Gayle King recalled the day she met him years ago.
02:24I remember being thrilled when he said,
02:26Hi, Gayle, how are you?
02:28You know my name?
02:29It was one of those, and I've been in awe ever since.
02:33But, you know, 93, what a good life and what a legacy is left behind.
02:37The country world was rocked by the passing of Toby Keith on February 5th.
02:41The Red Solo Cup singer died at the age of 62
02:44following a battle with stomach cancer.
02:46Nashville honored his memory throughout the year,
02:48toasting him with red cups at the CMT Awards
02:50and holding a special tribute concert with performances from Carrie Underwood,
02:54Luke Bryan, and more.
02:56Donald Sutherland died on June 20th at the age of 88.
02:59He was celebrated over the years for his roles in The Dirty Dozen,
03:02MASH, Clute, Ordinary People, and The Hunger Games, among other projects.
03:07His son Kiefer Sutherland broke the news of his passing,
03:10and he honored his father, writing in part,
03:12I personally think he was one of the most important actors
03:14in the history of film, never daunted by a role, good, bad, or ugly.
03:19He loved what he did and did what he loved.
03:21And one can never ask for more than that, a life well lived.
03:25Among those who paid tribute to Donald was Tom Blythe,
03:27who portrayed a younger version of Donald's Hunger Games character,
03:29Coriolanus Snow, in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
03:33Tom called it, quote,
03:36and had previously gushed over Donald's work in the franchise.
03:39He was so, like, you loved to hate him, and I love a character like that.
03:44And so, I mean, that's one of the reasons why I was so excited
03:46to, like, play a younger version.
03:48But yeah, I think for me, Donald Sutherland was, like,
03:51just, like, sumptuously bad.
03:53Soap opera icon Drake Hougaston was another star we lost in 2024.
03:57The beloved actor died on September 28th,
04:00one day shy of his 71st birthday, after battling pancreatic cancer.
04:04He was best known for his work on Days,
04:06where his character John Black and Deidre Hall's Marlena Evans
04:09cemented themselves as a daytime drama supercouple.
04:12Deidre recently spoke about how much she misses her late colleague.
04:15I loved him so.
04:17Marlena loved him so.
04:18They loved each other so.
04:23I will sometimes be sitting on the set and thinking,
04:29John is gone, and, oh, my gosh, Drake is gone.
04:34Another soap star who died this year was Johnny Wachter,
04:37the 37-year-old actor who portrayed Brando Corbin
04:39on General Hospital,
04:40was tragically shot and killed in Los Angeles on May 25th.
04:44His co-star Bonnie Burroughs shared just how beloved
04:46Johnny was on the General Hospital set.
04:48He treated everyone as an equal, the crew, the barista,
04:53Emma, the security guard.
04:54That makes me want to cry.
04:55She has a special connection to Johnny,
04:59and, you know, he'd bring her a Starbucks.
05:01He was just truly, you know, who you'd want to have in your life
05:06and to work with every day.
05:07Carl Weathers died on February 1st at the age of 76.
05:11The actor had many memorable roles over the years
05:13in Predator, Happy Gilmore, and The Mandalorian,
05:16but perhaps most notably starred as Apollo Creed
05:18in the Rocky film series.
05:20His Rocky co-star Sylvester Stallone
05:21shared a video honoring him and the impact he made.
05:24I never could have accomplished
05:27what we did with Rocky without him.
05:29He was absolutely brilliant.
05:32His voice, his size, his power,
05:34his athletic ability,
05:36but more importantly, his heart, his soul.
05:39This year, the world also lost fitness icon
05:42and TV personality Richard Simmons.
05:44He died on July 12th, one day after his 76th birthday,
05:47due to complications from recent falls.
05:49Prior to his passing,
05:51he had given a birthday interview to People magazine,
05:53where he shared a message of gratitude,
05:54saying in part,
05:55I feel good.
05:56I'm grateful that I'm here, that I am alive for another day.
05:59I'll spend my birthday doing what I do every day,
06:02which is to help people.
06:03On July 11th, Shelley Duvall passed away at the age of 75,
06:07following complications from diabetes.
06:09Shelley was best known for her roles in The Shining,
06:11Popeye, Nashville, and Annie Hall, among other films.
06:15It was on November 3rd that music icon Quincy Jones
06:18died at the age of 91.
06:19The legendary record producer and composer
06:22won more than two dozen Grammys
06:23over the course of his career,
06:24which saw him producing classic Michael Jackson records
06:27and composing notable film scores
06:29for The Wiz and The Color Purple.
06:30His daughter Rashida Jones wrote in part
06:32in a social media tribute,
06:34he was love.
06:35He made everyone he ever met feel loved and seen.
06:38That's his legacy.
06:39I was fortunate enough to experience this love
06:41in close proximity.
06:43Broadway legend Chita Rivera passed away
06:45after a brief illness on January 30th,
06:47just one week after she turned 91.
06:50Over her career,
06:51Chita originated some iconic roles on the stage,
06:53including Velma in Chicago,
06:55Aurora in Kiss of the Spider Woman,
06:57and Anita in West Side Story.
06:59The actresses who followed in her footsteps in these roles
07:02were among the many who mourned her loss.
07:04Rita Moreno, who played Anita on screen,
07:06called Chita, quote, the essence of Broadway
07:09and a, quote, remarkable woman and friend.
07:11While Catherine Zeta-Jones, who played Velma,
07:13thanked Chita for the, quote,
07:14incredible impact she had on her life.
07:17The theater community also lost Gavin Creel,
07:19who died on September 30th at the age of 48
07:22after being diagnosed for a rare form of sarcoma.
07:24The Broadway veteran was known for his work in musicals
07:27like Thoroughly Modern Millie, Hair,
07:29The Book of Mormon, and Hello Dolly.
07:31On September 28th,
07:33the multi-talented Kris Kristofferson
07:34died at the age of 88.
07:36He made a mark in both the worlds of music and acting,
07:39winning multiple Grammys,
07:40and starring in films like A Star is Born
07:42and The Blade Trilogy.
07:43And another actor who passed this year was Jenna Rollins.
07:46The screen icon was a two-time Oscar nominee
07:48for her work in A Woman Under the Influence and Gloria,
07:51both films directed by her husband, John Cassavetes.
07:54Their son, Nick Cassavetes, also became a filmmaker.
07:57He directed Jenna in her memorable role
07:59as present-day Ali in The Notebook.
