00:00Ecuador's National Electoral Council has rejected a request to discuss the irregularity that
00:04President Daniel Novoa intends to commit by staying in office while campaigning for re-election.
00:09The request, made by Councilwoman Elena Najera, demanded the Council to decide over the application
00:15of the law in question, which obliges the head of state to take an unpaid leave of absence
00:20during the campaign for re-election that starts on January 5.
00:23Novoa has failed to comply with Article 93 of the Democratic Code in order to avoid handing
00:28over the mandate to the Vice President Veronica Abad, as the Ecuadoran legal and constitutional
00:33framework require.
00:34In this context, after the Council's decision, Najera accused her colleagues of siding with
00:40the President at the expense of democratic principles.
00:46Yes, it is important that the National Electoral Council pronounces itself by means of a resolution
00:56so that from there the compliance or non-compliance with the norm may be derived.
01:01Having said this, I know that you come to these sessions having previously discussed
01:05that you already know what is going to happen.
01:08I already anticipated it in an interview on the radio, that in general, the only councillor
01:13that is and acts alone is me, since all of you manage yourselves through previous discussions,
01:19even the schedules you set are already agreed upon.
01:22So because of that, the citizens tell you and are aware of who is going to manage the
01:26electoral processes, because it cannot be that here interpretations are given based
01:31on relationships with whichever government is in power.
01:39In this context, the National Electoral Council of Ecuador approved an almost 14 million dollar
01:43fund for the electoral campaign.
01:45Resources will be distributed in an equitable manner for leading campaigns on press, radio,
01:50television, social media, among others.
01:52The electoral activity is scheduled for January 5th to February 6th, 2025.
01:56We are going to the polls where over 13 million voters are eligible to elect the new Ecuadorian
02:01head of state.
02:02The 151 members of the National Assembly and five representatives to Parliament will be
02:06elected as well.
