00:00Watching a movie can invoke a wide variety of emotions. This doesn't even have to be
00:04all positive, as there are many tear-jerking or hate-fuelled scenes as they are uplifting
00:10and joyous. On another level entirely, however, there are scenes that are just pure cringe.
00:16Those that are so bad they are genuinely difficult to watch. So let's dive in. I'm Adam, this
00:22is WhatCulture, and here are 10 most cringeworthy moments in recent movies.

02:05Alright, and now back to the list.
02:12Taika Waititi's follow-up to the exceptional Thor Ragnarok missed the mark tonally,
02:17and is one of the weakest outings in the MCU to date.
02:20From Jane Foster's catchphrase and the screaming goats, to Korg's painful voiceovers,
02:25Thor's new fighting style alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy and literally anything Russell Crowe said as Zeus,
02:32there was no shortage of scenes that could have claimed a spot on this particular list.
02:37None of the above was the worst, however.
02:39Whereas its predecessor Ragnarok was laugh-out-loud funny, Thor Love and Thunder was full of moments
02:45that were clearly written to be funny, but went down like a lead balloon.
02:49The absolute worst example of this was Mjolnir being jealous of Thor's relationship with Stormbreaker.
02:56Even Chris Hemsworth has spoken about how the movie went too silly,
02:59saying as much in an interview with GQ, and Mjolnir's jealousy exemplifies this concern.
03:05Did anyone really need to know that Thor's weapon had a feud?
03:10Number 9, Nolan North's cameo, Uncharted.
03:13One of the best things about HBO's The Last of Us was how it approached giving cameos to the cast of the original Naughty Dog games.
03:20Troy Baker, Jeffrey Pierce, Merle Dandridge, and Ashley Johnson all appeared,
03:25but there was nothing gratuitous about it at all.
03:28Every single one of them enhanced the show.
03:30The same cannot be said about Sony's adaptation of another PlayStation powerhouse, Uncharted.
03:36Nolan North, who voiced Nathan Drake in the series, is a voice acting legend,
03:41and was rightfully given some screen time during the movie.
03:44Surely though, something better could have been written for him.
03:47As Nate and Chloe walk up the beach after crash landing in the sea,
03:51from a sun lounger, North said something similar happened to him previously.
03:55There will be a lot of people who didn't know who this was,
03:58and without the context of the cameo itself, the scene made absolutely no sense.
04:04Even with the knowledge of who this was, it's a poor excuse for a cameo.
04:08It's up there with Agent 47 walking past two people playing as him
04:12on the PlayStation in 2007's Hitman adaptation.
04:16This scene screamed of desperation to get North on screen for the sake of it,
04:21rather than actually giving the voice actor a real part to play.
04:268. The Death of Mr. Blute β Polar
04:30Released in 2019, Netflix's Polar is a bizarre movie that suffers from
04:34trying to balance two completely incompatible, ironically, polar opposite tones.
04:40There is the dark noir side of things, led by a typically strong Mads Mikkelsen performance
04:45that unsurprisingly is the best part of the entire thing,
04:48against the eccentricity of Matt Lucas' villain.
04:52The story tells of Duncan, an ageing hitman,
04:54who finds himself at odds with his former boss, Mr. Blute.
04:57Mikkelsen's quiet and broody scenes could have actually made for a strong movie themselves,
05:03if not for the other side of Polar.
05:05In Mr. Blute, Matt Lucas plays a horrendously eccentric villain
05:09as out of place next to Mikkelsen as any antagonist you are likely to find.
05:13Every scene, without hyperbole, is as cringeworthy as the last
05:17in a wildly over-the-top and hard-to-watch performance,
05:21but Mr. Blute's death scene is arguably the worst of the lot.
05:25When the two characters finally come together, Blute's security team runs off,
05:29causing the villain to call them f***ing pussies
05:31in what could be the worst line delivery in the movie.
05:34Then a very fake-looking head of the villain,
05:37eyes open and mouth agape, is thrown out of the window.
05:41Thankfully, this scene brought an end to the woeful character,
05:44but in a very suitably cringeworthy way.
05:477. The Fight Outside the Grocery Store β The Irishman
05:51Digital de-aging is something that Hollywood is utilising more and more these days.
05:56In this regard, the industry has come a long way
05:58since the very plastic-looking Charles Xavier in X-Men The Last Stand,
06:03but still, the effects are far from perfect.
06:06Even in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman, a movie in which the de-aging effects
06:10on the likes of Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino were generally strong,
06:15there were moments that fell below the bar of what was expected.
06:19In particular, when Robert De Niro goes to the grocery store
06:22to beat up the man who shoved his daughter.
06:24At the time, De Niro was pushing 80 years old,
06:27though of course the movie made him look much younger.
06:30This wasn't an issue until he was tasked with something of an action scene,
06:34where he had to beat someone up.
06:36It was here that the veil of the effects dropped somewhat.
06:39CGI can make an actor's face look a lot younger than it is,
06:43but it couldn't inject any youth into the way De Niro moved
06:46and kicked the poor man on the sidewalk.
06:48These were clearly the movements of a man considerably older than the character,
06:52and in all honesty, it was awkward to watch.
06:56Number 6.
06:57Hubie's Inhaler β Hubie Halloween
07:00Adam Sandler's career has seen something of a shot in the arm in recent years,
07:04with the actor's performances and the likes of Uncut Gems and Hustle
07:07showing the world a completely different side to his range.
07:11That hasn't stopped him from making the likes of Hubie Halloween, however,
07:14with a performance in 2020 reminiscent of a time in Sandler's career best left in the past.
07:20The actor went back to silly and painfully unfunny as the character,
07:24with his usual cast of friends along for the ride.
07:27During one scene, Kevin James' Sergeant Downey calls Hubie into the station
07:32to give him a special assignment.
07:34Though it's just a ruse to get him to stop bothering the police,
07:37the idea of going undercover excites Hubie so much he takes a deep breath from his inhaler.
07:42He then proceeds to interrupt Downey by exhaling no fewer than ten times.
07:47It wasn't funny the first time, and it was just sad by the tenth.
07:52Number 5.
07:53Antoine's Entire Character β Free Guy
07:56Following on from Thor Ragnarok, Taika Waititi became one of the most popular names in Hollywood.
08:01Though it feels as though the star may not be rising quite so much
08:05since Ragnarok's follow-up, Love and Thunder.
08:07In that sweet spot between those two movies,
08:09Waititi played the villainous Antoine Hovacelic in Ryan Reynolds' Free Guys.
08:14While the character was supposed to be an obnoxious guy,
08:17and there wasn't meant to be anything likeable about him,
08:20it's fair to say that Waititi turned both of these dials way past ten.
08:25Instead of just being someone for the audience to root against,
08:28Waititi's character actively detracts from the movie itself.
08:32At no point is he ever believable as an actual real person.
08:35His mannerisms, every bit of dialogue, every interaction with another human,
08:40and every conversation are all supposed to be comic relief,
08:43but they miss the mark by a wide margin.
08:46Similar to the majority of Love and Thunder,
08:48this may have worked had Waititi scaled it back somewhat,
08:52but instead the tone is just too over-the-top to enjoy.
08:56Number 4.
08:57The Strip Search β Gemini Man
08:59In Gemini Man, Will Smith was brought face-to-face with a younger version of himself,
09:04earning a fair amount of publicity in the build-up to its release
09:07thanks to the dual role and de-aging technology used to allow it.
09:12The movie divided audiences and critics,
09:14with its 26% Tomatometer score being offset by a huge 83% audience score.
09:20However, though there may have been big disagreements surrounding Ang Lee's 2019 outing,
09:26there is one aspect that feels more agreeable,
09:29namely the strip search scene.
09:31As Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Danny is sent to speak to Junior,
09:35the younger Will Smith makes her strip to her underwear so she can be searched for a wire.
09:40You don't have to have too much knowledge or experience of such a thing
09:44to know that this could have been achieved quite easily with the character's clothes staying on.
09:49Similar in a way to the infamous Alice Eve underwear shot from Star Trek Into Darkness,
09:54this moment in Gemini Man felt weirdly and abruptly gratuitous.
09:593. Flounder's Design β The Little Mermaid
10:03Even the very best remakes of the Disney classics have failed
10:07miserably to recapture the magic that made them so popular in the first place,
10:12and it feels like with each new release,
10:13the studio gets further and further away from achieving such a feat.
10:17The latest Disney retelling, 2023's The Little Mermaid,
10:21saw Ariel return to cinema screens alongside all of her underwater friends,
10:26and behind The Jungle Book and The Lion King, this took more CGI than most.
10:30The results were⦠not good.
10:33The obsession with adapting these beloved animated stories into live action,
10:37or at least more realistic special effects,
10:40robs them of any kind of magic, any personality and any fun.
10:44The Little Mermaid's supporting cast suffered greatly from this,
10:48but arguably none more so than Flounder.
10:51Originally a smiley, bouncy, happy addition to the movie,
10:55Flounder all of a sudden became nothing more than a generic fish.
10:59Yes, the technology to bring to life such a realistic looking creature is impressive in a way,
11:05but that's completely beside the point.
11:07Flounder's new design lacked any heart,
11:10and was incapable of emoting the way his animated counterpart could.
11:14It was actually hilarious how badly the movie missed the mark on its character designs,
11:18which was just one of the negative factors impacting the movie.
11:22Number 2, Milo's Dancing, Morbius
11:26The last few years have not been good ones for the comic book movie genre.
11:30The market has become more and more ridiculously saturated,
11:33interest has faded after Avengers Endgame,
11:36and unfortunately it does feel as though the quality has noticeably dipped.
11:40One of the most notorious movies in recent times has been Morbius,
11:44widely regarded as one of the worst comic book movies ever made,
11:49and a laughingstock on the internet.
11:51There isn't much to enjoy about the movie,
11:53and although usually brilliant, even Matt Smith isn't safe from ridicule.
11:58Smith plays Milo in the movie,
12:00who is meant to be the antithesis of Morbius in that he revels in his vampiric gifts.
12:05This sparks an inevitable turn to the dark side,
12:08but what was less inevitable, yet was still included in the movie,
12:12was the horrendous dancing scene.
12:14Obviously full of life and vigour after so many years of struggling physically,
12:18Milo decides to let loose and dance.
12:22Number 1, The Final Scene, The Flash
12:26Like Thor, Love and Thunder, The Flash is another comic book movie
12:29from which you could take your pick of cringeworthy moments.
12:33Some however, in particular the unwarranted posthumous cameos,
12:37went past this and into the territory of offensive.
12:40Sticking to pure cringe, Barry's confession at the whim of the Lasso of Truth,
12:44where he reveals he knows sex exists but hasn't experienced it,
12:49is bested by the final scene of the movie.
12:51This was supposed to be the chapter of the DCEU that changed everything,
12:56answered all questions and set the entire scene for the future of the DCEU
13:01being headed up by James Gunn.
13:03The ending of The Flash could have and should have been something truly exciting,
13:08and yet the last shot did nothing but ensure the film ended with a whimper.
13:13Barry Allen being stuck in the Schumacher-verse with George Clooney's Bruce Wayne
13:16likely wasn't the ending anyone expected, and it left more questions than answers.
13:22Unfortunately, The Flash had one more trick up its sleeve
13:25to make this ending even more groan-inducing.
13:28Throughout the movie, Barry had glued a tooth back into his mouth
13:31after having it fall out.
13:33And the big final shot and reaction to him seeing this new Bruce Wayne
13:37was nothing more than the tooth falling back out.
13:40With the kind of CGI that would have been considered bad
13:42the last time Clooney donned the Batsuit in 1997.
13:46This film should have ushered in a new era of the franchise,
13:50and this is how they chose to end it?
13:52And there we have it folks, our list of cringe-worthy moments in recent movies.
