00:05to strengthen the capacity of the residents to face the challenges of calamities and disasters.
00:10The details were reported by Kathleen Ramones of the Philippine Information Agency in La Union.
00:17The first city leg of the Handa Pilipinas at Thunderbird Resort, San Fernando City, La Union was a success that was made possible by the Department of Science and Technology.
00:28This program will further strengthen the capacity of the residents to face the challenges of disasters through the use of technology and innovation.
00:38The new technologies in monitoring disasters, such as automated weather stations, early warning systems, and geographic information systems,
00:49will help in a faster and more effective response to calamities.
00:53According to DOSC Secretary Renato Solidum Jr., through innovation and technology,
00:59every Filipino has the ability and knowledge to protect themselves and their families from disasters.
01:08We need to make sure that we look at wealth protection, disaster reduction and climate resilience
01:17as a driver to achieving wealth creation, sustainability, and good human well-being.
01:25We are achieving the very purpose of building resilience.
01:28There were also workshops and actual simulation exercises that showed coordination between local officials, emergency response teams, and residents.
01:39These were aimed at strengthening the readiness and capability of the city to face crises such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and fires.
01:47Meanwhile, Elizabeth Apple Apilado, a barangay councillor, shared her experience with great help
01:56because it makes it easier to understand how to use technology, such as early warning systems, to protect their community.
02:04Aside from introducing innovative technologies,
02:07the importance of cooperation was also highlighted through local government agencies and residents.
02:14Through this initiative, it was proven again that rapid technology and assistance
02:20is key to the long-term stability and prosperity of the communities.
02:24We already feel the effects of climate change, so we need to help our communities.
