00:00The search is on for the body of a 28-year-old Port Lincoln man who police believe is the
00:08victim of a fatal shark attack.
00:10He was going for a wave at Granites near Streaky Bay in the state's west coast.
00:15And yesterday afternoon, a fisher posted to social media saying he was aware of a large
00:19and aggressive shark very close to Granites.
00:22And later, just after seven last night, witnesses saw the attack.
00:26And according to police, one witness recovered his surfboard, but the surfer is yet to be
00:31found.
00:32Police say they're pretty confident that, sadly, the young surfer has been killed by
00:36the shark and are preparing a report for the coroner.
00:40Now, shark attacks in this area in South Australia generally are rare, but in the last 18 months,
00:47there's been an unprecedented spate of attacks in South Australia, including three fatal.
00:53Just over a year ago, a 55-year-old man was taken by a shark at Granites and his body
00:58was never recovered.
01:00So it means that the community, the surfing community and the people of the west coast
01:05are going to be feeling this really deeply.
01:08And also, shark mitigation technology is going to be front of mind.
01:12But for now, the search continues at Granites.
