In March 2011, popular discontent with the rule of Bashar al-Assad triggered large-scale protests and pro-democracy rallies across Syria, as part of the wider Arab Spring protests in the region. The Syrian Civil War is an ongoing multi-sided conflict involving various state-sponsored and non-state actors. The war has left millions dead and displaced. Despite interventions by international aid agencies, the humanitarian crisis continues to remain dire. Millions need food, shelter and medical care. The war is a testament to the devastating consequences of political unrest, foreign intervention and violence. There is an urgent need for peace in Syria.

01:03According to the Syrian rebel group, Hayat Tehrir al-Sham, the fall of Assad marks the
01:10dawn of a new chapter in Syria's history.
01:14Welcome to Deep Dive with Outlook.
01:17Let's revisit how the Syrian conflict impacted millions.
01:22The civil war began in the year 2011 following a wave of pro-democracy protests backed by
01:29the Arab Spring.
01:31It has involved various local and international factors.
01:35Many civilians complained about unemployment, corruption and a lack of political freedom
01:42under the rule of Bashar al-Assad.
01:45The conflict has undergone several phases.
01:48In the first three years, the opposition forces were seizing territories.
01:53In 2014, with the emergence of ISI's, Syria entered a dark chapter.
02:00They tried to control large territories.
02:03They made Raqqa their capital.
02:05The group also carried out widespread atrocities including mass executions, sexual slavery
02:13and forced displacements that has targeted civilians, minorities and opposition groups.
02:20With the involvement of the Russian Federation in 2015 and their aerial capabilities and
02:26strategic backing, the Assad regime successfully regained significant territories such as Damascus,
02:34Aleppo and Italy.
02:36Additionally, Iran and Hezbollah started shifting the balance in the favor of Assad.
02:42The United States was concentrating on combating ISIS and partnering with the Kurdish-led Syrian
02:49democratic forces to secure control in the northeastern region.
02:54But in response to concerns regarding Kurdish autonomy along its border, Turkey commenced
03:00its own military operations which helped them establish a buffer zone in northern Syria.
03:07All this led to the Syrian conflict transforming into a proxy war where global powers were
03:13competing for influence at the expense of the Syrian people.
03:17The conflict was continuing for 14 years and the toll of the conflict on the people of
03:23Syria is beyond repair.
03:25According to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, at least 5,80,000 people have been
03:32killed, including an estimated 3,06,887 civilians from 1 March 2011 to 31 March 2021.
03:44Nearly 13 million people have been displaced, including 6.7 million refugees.
03:5114 years of conflict has led to humanitarian challenges such as hunger, malnutrition, which
03:58is further fueled by climate change.
04:00According to the data from the World Food Programme, over 12.9 million Syrians are struggling
04:08with inadequate food supplies, while another 2.6 million are on the brink of food insecurity.
04:15While some refugees express hope of returning home, most remain hesitant due to safety concerns
04:23and the lack of basic infrastructure in Syria.
04:27Despite tentative signs of progress, the road to resolution is long and fraught with
04:32challenges.
04:33The Syrian crisis is a testament to resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship.
04:41The world must not forget.
04:44Stay tuned with Outlook for our next issue on never-ending wars.
