00:00Let's stay in the AFC East. The New York Jets play the Dolphins today, Cap. Mike
00:04Vrabel did an interview this past week. Is Rex Ryan a serious candidate for this
00:09job or is it just window dressing at this point?
00:12All right, let me explain this one, Joe. So you obviously know that he coached the
00:16Jets and they were in the AFC Championship game back-to-back
00:20seasons. So Rex knows that building. Yes, he's worked in the media since he was
00:26fired from the Bills in 2016. He worked for ESPN currently. And he
00:31maintains a relation with Mike Tannenbaum, the former general manager, who by the
00:35way, he and Rick Spielman, the former Vikings GM, they're running the coaching
00:39search and the GM search for owner Woody Johnson. And they're doing the vetting.
00:43Obviously, Mike knows Rex very, very well. But this is what you do, Joe, when you're
00:49not at the point where you could interview people who are currently
00:51employed. You talk to people who've been there, done that. You get an opinion. Okay,
00:56what do you think of our roster? What do you think of our organization? What do you
00:58think of our building? That's why you do it. This is commonplace around the
01:01National Football League. You try to talk to people who have an expertise in what
01:05goes on in buildings. You get his perspective. See, the thing about Rex Ryan
01:09is, okay, you know you're gonna get the truth from him. He puts it out there. He's
01:13not gonna sugarcoat anything. That's what, Joe, that's what you actually want.
01:16Now, could he be a serious candidate at some point? Once they get through the
01:21process of assembling their list, which they've done pretty much, they'll put the
01:25permission slips in to interview. They'll have to do the virtual interviews
01:29first, and then they'll get to the in-person interviews down the line. Once
01:32they get through that list, then they'll reshuffle the deck to see who gets
01:34second interviews. That'll come down to who they like and who they don't like.
01:38That'll ultimately determine, would Rex Ryan be a serious candidate? Right now, I
01:42would not put him on that serious candidate list. The other thing for Rex
01:45Ryan is, and we know he's a phenomenal defensive coach, the knock on Rex is the
01:50lack of development of offense. Yes, they got to the AFC Championship game twice,
01:54Joe, with Mark Sanchez, but that's when they had Thomas Jones. It was about the
01:58running game and defense. Rex has got to show that he could actually develop an
02:02offense. Cap, it's very interesting to think that a team would want to go and
02:08grab an offensive guy and go that far back, right? I understand Rex is around
02:13football all the time, but a guy like Brian Flores, I'm sure, would jump at the
02:16opportunity to be a coach again. We see what's been going on in Minnesota, but I
02:20know that sometimes that's how these things work. In terms of the candidates,
02:24maybe we're hearing a Rex Ryan because it's not a strong pool this go-around.
02:30What are you hearing around the potential options to fill some of these
02:34vacancies? Yeah, Kevin, no, the talk around the league is, if you put
02:39together a list, you're not finding a lot of good offensive candidates. Now, there's
02:43some really good ones. You mentioned Brian Flores. Brian Flores didn't do a
02:46bad job in Miami. It was the issues on offense, his relationship with Tua
02:51Tunghapailoa, the quarterback. It wasn't good. It's not a secret. That was
02:55part of why he lost his job, and he wants to be a head coach again. It's not a secret
02:59to anybody who knows him, to anyone in coaching. He is right now, arguably, the
03:02NFL's best defensive coordinator. He's phenomenal. What he's done with not a ton
03:06of talent on defense is just remarkable. So he's going to get a probably second
03:11chance. That's going to happen some day, but if you look at my list,
03:15guys, it's just not very good. Now, there's some guys like Liam Cullen. I
03:19was told by a league source, you got to put him on your list. He's phenomenal.
03:22The job that he's done with Baker Mayfield, who's been unbelievable this
03:26season, who's kind of carrying the football team with the Buccaneers. So
03:30it's not a great offensive list. It's a list made up, guys, of mostly
03:35defensive head coaching candidates. The top one would be Mike Vrabel. Again, now,
03:39he's not coaching. He just interviewed for the Jets head coaching job, but he is
03:42seen by far as a guy from the defensive side of football who's the top
03:47candidate.
