00:00Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:16up all of Kent's sporting action. I'm Abbey Hook. Here's what to expect on this Monday
00:21the 6th of January.
00:23Bonner Voyage. Gillingham part ways with manager Mark Bonner after a string of poor results.
00:29One in, one out. We hear from the new Priestfield boss in his first press conference.
00:38And devils in the darts. After Luke the Nuke's world championship win, who from KMTV can
00:43throw a bullseye?
00:47But first today we start with the news that Gillingham have sacked manager Mark Bonner
00:51after seven months in charge at Priestfield. The former Cambridge United manager oversaw
00:5528 games in his role alongside assistant manager Anthony Hayes, who has also left the
01:00club. It comes after a difficult season for the Gills, who sit 14th in the League 2 table
01:05and 11 points clear of the playoff places. Bartholomew Hall has more.
01:09One out and another in. The revolving door of Priestfield's manager's office is now set
01:15to welcome its fourth occupant in the space of two years, as Mark Bonner is replaced by
01:19former Aquington Stanley boss John Coleman after just seven months in charge.
01:25Bonner took the top job at Gillingham at the start of the 24-25 season, following the sudden
01:30sacking of Stephen Clements. Despite a strong start to the season, which saw the Gills top
01:36the League 2 table for a brief period, a poor run of form over the Christmas break has left
01:41the Gills sitting 14th and 10 points from the playoff places. However, losing to local
01:47rivals Bromley for a second time appeared to be the final straw, a third defeat in a
01:52row, with Bonner himself admitting things weren't looking good.
01:56What can you change from here to change the direction I suppose?
02:00Yeah, look, it's loads of things really. It's a mess at the moment. The team looks a mess.
02:06It's so many ins and outs, chops and changes, morale low, loads of frustrated people. Me
02:13with the players' inconsistencies, the players with the inconsistency of coming in and out
02:17of the team and not having runs and things changing. I don't think we are capable yet
02:23of being one of the top teams, but we're certainly capable of being better than we are at the
02:28moment.
02:29Thanking Bonner for his time at the club, Gillingham's managing director Joe Comper
02:32said we needed to make a change to give us the best possible opportunity of getting to
02:37where we want to be come the start of May. Moments after the announcement of Bonner's
02:42departure on Sunday night, the club followed up, officially appointing his replacement,
02:47former Accrington Stanley and Rochdale boss John Coleman, who's set to remain with Gillingham
02:52until the end of the season.
02:54John Coleman completely came out of the blue. He's got no connection with this club at all.
03:00And maybe that's a good thing because he's going to come in with a completely clean slate
03:04as far as that's concerned. I think he's worked with Andrews and Nolan from his Accrington
03:10days, but the other part, I think he doesn't know the club at all, which is probably, as
03:14I say, a good thing.
03:16The appointment of John Coleman might come as a shock to some fans, but with just a few
03:20days until their next fixture and the transfer window firmly open, it's up to the new boss
03:25to prove he's the right man to steer this ship back into the waters of a promotion fight.
03:30Bartholomew Hall for KMTV.
03:33Well, in the past few hours, Gillingham's new manager, John Coleman, has been speaking
03:38to the press alongside managing director Joe Comper. It comes just a few days ahead
03:42of Gillingham's next fixture against Fleetwood, where Coleman will take his seat in the home
03:47dugout for the first time. Here's the new boss speaking when he's asked why he's joined
03:51the medway club and the expectations he has for his team.
03:55It's a club that can go places and it's, you know, I've craved all my life to be successful.
04:04The first thing is your energy levels and your work rate. So, if you don't want to work
04:10hard enough, you won't play for me. That's just a fact of life. I know all players are
04:18different and some players can give the impression that they're not working hard. But if I don't
04:23see the effort and the desire, they certainly won't be playing for this club. And I think
04:30that's the minimum you should expect as a football fan.
04:33Our reporter Emily Riley-O'Donnell joins me now from Priestfield, where you were at
04:37John Coleman's first press conference today. What more do we know about him as a manager?
04:43Yeah, John Coleman said he's itching to be back in management. So, this is his first
04:49job back in football since he was sacked by Accra and Stanley in March last year, where
04:53he was there for 10 years as manager and that was his second spell at Accrington. And his
05:00biggest highlights there were getting promoted to League One with the club in 2018. And he
05:05maintained that position in the third tier of English football until they got relegated
05:08in 2023. But he's highly regarded in Accrington. Two spells at the club, 10 years, it's a long
05:16time and he knows the AFL very, very well. And I think that goes to show. The Scouser
05:21seemed like a surprising appointment for Jill's fans. But the online presence of fans, they
05:27seem pleased that he's been welcomed here at Priestfield today.
05:32And it's the fourth manager we've seen in just a couple of years. He's only signed a
05:35six-month contract. What does John Coleman think he can achieve in that time?
05:41Yeah, well, he's optimistic about what he can achieve in such a short time period. He
05:49emphasised hunger. He emphasised that he's bothered about work rate on the pitch and
05:54that effort is paramount to what he wants to see from his players. He even said that
05:58he was less concerned about players saying that they played their best game. He wanted
06:03them to say that they'd played their biggest effort in a game. So, yeah, it goes to show
06:09that I think he's trying to change that attitude, perhaps, in the changing rooms. And what he
06:14wants to see is the players give their all on the pitch for this club.
06:18And we also heard from Joe Compa today at the press conference.
06:23Yeah, he's the managing director here at Gillingham. And he said that it's embarrassing
06:28that the club have been through their fourth manager in just two seasons, which is something
06:33bold for somebody to say who is part of the set-up themselves. But he's optimistic still
06:38about what Coleman could achieve here in the next six months and was optimistic talking
06:44about what might happen come May.
06:46The reality is we're hovering through the season. If we go and have a second half of
06:52the season that brings in 40 points, we're right in the hunt and we've got a chance.
06:57So I think it's far too long to go in the season to be saying we can't do it. But we
07:04have got to get going. And that's part of the reason why we decided to change now, because
07:09realistically, if we waited a month, the transfer window goes. And then there's also a lot of
07:15games that go and it starts to become really, really difficult.
07:21I spoke to Joe Compa at the press conference earlier today and we'll have more football
07:24later in the programme. But now a look at the rest of today's headlines, where returning
07:28Australian bowling all-rounder Tom Rogers says he can't wait to work under the Kent
07:32Spitfires new head coach Adam Holyoake.
07:35Despite Kent finishing bottom of the South group, the 30-year-old made a positive impact
07:39last season, including striking an unbeaten 31 from just 12 balls when the Spitfires lost
07:44out to Glamorgan. Speaking on the announcement of his joining of the club, Rogers said his
07:48time in Canterbury was short but sweet and he's raring to go again.
07:54Take a look at this. Kent Olympian Dame Kelly Holmes has joined in with this weekend's Maidstone
08:00River Park park run, joining hundreds of others in paying tribute to long-time attendee Howard
08:05Piper. In honour of him, the group ran their original route for one last time and renamed
08:10their new route's finish as Howard's Hill. Writing on her Instagram, Ms Holmes says as
08:15well as being pleased with her run, that she changed her plans in an instant to make
08:19sure she could attend the memorial run.
08:24Swimmers have taken part in a postponed New Year's Day dip in Ramsgate after the original
08:28event was called off due to strong winds. The event is held each year in memory of Joseph
08:33Brown, a baby boy from Margate who tragically passed away after being born 14 weeks early
08:38back in 2012. Over the years, the swim has raised thousands of pounds for charities including
08:43the Ronald McDonald House. Despite the late change in date, a big crowd still turned out
08:48with many taking part in a costume competition before taking the dive.
08:54Now let's take a look back at this weekend's football results. With Gillingham's match
08:57against Chesterfield postponed after heavy snowfall in the East Midlands, attention's
09:01turned to some of those fixtures a bit closer to home. And nothing was shaping up better
09:05than in Dartford where Adrian Pennock's side were looking to go a whopping 15 games unbeaten.
09:11Finn takes us through the weekend.
09:13This weekend Whitehawk became the first visitors to Prince's Park in 2025 as Dartford looked
09:17to continue their unbeaten run and start off the year strong at home making it 15 matches
09:22unbeaten. The first breakthrough of the game came in the 23rd minute where after a scramble
09:27in the Whitehawk penalty area, a loose clearance fell to Dartford captain Josh Hill who put
09:31the ball into the back of the net with a thunderous strike.
09:39After making some changes at half time, Aidy Pennock's side continued the pressure in the
09:45second 45 with Callum Jones finding the ball at the edge of the box, taking a deflection
09:49from the keeper and doubling the Darts lead.
09:57However the relegation threatened visitors weren't going down without a fight. In the
10:0173rd minute Joshua Nathandra capitalised on a gap in the hosts defence to pull one back
10:06setting up a tense final period. Moments later Samir Kurathas found himself fouled
10:10in the box before being awarded a penalty, which he cleanly converted. 3-1 and it didn't
10:20look as though things were going to turn around. To tie off a dominant performance, Eddie Desants
10:24weaved through the Whitehawks defence in the 7th added minute before slotting home to make
10:28the final score 4-1. A thrilling game for the Dartford fans who move up to third in
10:33the league after their 15th game unbeaten. Elsewhere in the Ithsman Premier, Chatham
10:37Town lost ground on their campaign after going down 2-0 at Chichester who dropped them down
10:42to 7th. Meanwhile league leaders Dover Athletic protected their stay at the top of the table
10:46with a 3-0 win over Hendon. Special mention to Sittingbourne this week as the Brickies
10:50secured their place in the last 16 of the FA Trophy, beating Salisbury 2-1 in another
10:55huge upset for the underdog side. Richie Hamill broke the deadlock in the second half before
11:00Henry Sinai clinched victory and added time. In League 2, what would have been Mark Bonner's
11:07final game in charge was postponed due to the weather. And in the National League South,
11:11Tonbridge Angels scored a solid victory over Western Supermare at a chilly Halcyon Wealth
11:16Longmead Stadium, scoring once in each half. The win sees the Angels sit 9th as the 2025
11:22year of football officially gets underway. And of course you can keep up to date with
