00:00Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces on January 6, 2025, he would step down in
00:06the coming months after nine years in office.
00:09This after pressure from lawmakers concerned about his Liberal Party's poor pre-election
00:13poll results.
00:15He says in a press conference, he would remain as Prime Minister and party leader until a
00:19new leader is chosen.
00:21Trudeau says, quote, this country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it
00:25has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the
00:29best option in that election.
00:31Trudeau previously managed to dismiss concerns from liberal lawmakers about poor poll performance
00:35and the loss of safe seats.
00:37However, calls for his resignation grew after he attempted to demote Finance Minister Chrystia
00:42Freeland, one of his key allies, after she opposed his spending plans.
00:47Freeland resigned instead, accusing Trudeau of focusing on political gimmicks instead
00:50of prioritizing the country's needs.
