Its minister Anthony Loke said the current electricity charges for these operators are the same as those for businesses, which makes it financially challenging for the sector.

00:00Is that also driving the electrification that you talk about?
00:03Electrification of public transport, electrification of the government fleet?
00:07I guess that's a bit easier if it's completely under your control,
00:10in terms of basically how you want to do that.
00:12Electrification of public transport, yes, we are ongoing.
00:16Electrification of buses, for example,
00:18the Cabinet has instructed the industry to start procuring EV buses.
00:25Pasarana will start procuring EV buses this year.
00:28So all new buses will be EV-based.
00:31Our train, of course, is all electrified.
00:34One of the things that we always fought for in the Ministry of Transport
00:37is that we want a special rate for electricity for public transport.
00:42Because currently the tariff is the same for businesses, for public transport.
00:49So that makes it very, very costly for the public transport system.
00:53MRT, LRT, Pasarana, 30% to 35%, even KTMB,
00:5835% of their costs are paying electricity bill.
01:02So that is very costly in terms of public transport operators.
01:06What we are looking at is possibly looking at a special tariff for these operators
01:10to encourage public transport operators,
01:12not only government but also primary public transport operators,
01:15to go towards more electrification.
01:18And of course EV are the choices.
01:21So besides that, of course, we hope that government fleet can be changed.
01:27So government fleet, of course, we have long-term contract,
01:30so it's not that easy to change overnight.
01:33But we are starting with ASEAN.
01:35So all ASEAN guests coming into the country are adopting or using EV vehicles.
01:41Even the Singapore delegation today are starting to use EV.
01:44So I think that is also a message by the government to be sent to the market
01:49and also to the region that we are looking at electrification of our transport.
