00:00Could Minecraft 2 become another notch in the belt of, well, notch?
00:04Or will the controversial gamedev axe the idea before it even becomes a reality?
00:09Go on, get outta here!"
00:12Minecraft is the best-selling video game in history, and for a good reason.
00:16It's basically the perfect sandbox, and thanks to more than a decade of updates, it's become
00:20one of the deepest and most rewarding survival games around.
00:24It even has a movie adaptation on the way.
00:26There are plenty of other games similar to Minecraft for fans to explore, and they get
00:32a little burnt out on punching blocky trees, but almost everyone agrees that Minecraft
00:37itself is a near-perfect experience.
00:40Emphasis on almost in that last sentence, because at least one person seems to think
00:45there's serious room for improvement in the Minecraft formula.
00:48Marcus Notchperson, the original creator of Minecraft, who surprised everyone when he
00:53kicked off 2025 by more or less announcing Minecraft 2.
00:58Notch's announcement is especially shocking because he no longer has anything to do with
01:02Mojang, the developer that works on Minecraft.
01:04He sold the company to Microsoft in 2014, and walked away from the deal with a hefty
01:09payday.
01:10In the years since the sale, Notch has arguably become less known as a game developer and
01:17more for his controversial statements online.
01:20He's voiced support for QAnon and radical conspiracy theories like Pizzagate, and he
01:24has a history of complaining about feminism and LGBTQ plus pride.
01:29By announcing his intention to follow up one of the most life-changing games of all time,
01:34Notch has found himself back in the internet's spotlight, but the reactions to his latest
01:38project have been all over the map.
01:40On January 1st, Notch made a post on X that gave a rough explanation of a new game he
01:45has in the works.
01:46Notch said it was a project aimed at combining classic roguelike mechanics with a tile-based
01:50first-person adventure experience.
01:53After laying out that idea, though, Notch said that he had started to wonder if people
01:56would be more excited about him making a Minecraft-style project.
02:00Notch ended his post with a poll, and at the time of this writing, over 80 percent of the
02:05respondents have voted for him to start working on the spiritual sequel.
02:09In another post, Notch clarified to a commenter, quote,
02:12I basically announced Minecraft 2.
02:14He expressed some concerns that this spiritual successor, like many others, could fail to
02:18live up to the original, but he also found an opportunity to take a podshot at Microsoft's
02:23handling of Minecraft.
02:24Notch wrote,
02:25I do also intend to do this in a way that in no way tries to sneakily infringe on the
02:29incredible work the Mojang team is doing and that Microsoft is successfully doing the Microsoft
02:34s----ification about.
02:35Hey, alright, calm down!
02:38Notch didn't say quite how his spiritual successor would differ much from the current version
02:41of Minecraft, and since making the somewhat shocking announcement, he hasn't laid out
02:46any specifics about the game or what fans should expect in terms of a release timeline.
02:50However, fans and detractors alike are running with the news.
02:53There are definitely some people in Notch's replies who are excited about the prospect
02:57of him creating an all-new Minecraft, but the majority of the reactions to his big reveal
03:02are full of confusion.
03:03For the most part, Minecraft players just can't wrap their heads around what a sequel
03:07would even look like, or how Notch could skirt around potential copyright infringement.
03:12Minecraft has evolved quite a bit in the decades since Notch sold it, and if anything, the
03:16game has proven that it's entirely capable of adapting to what new players want to see.
03:21One ex-user wrote,
03:22Seriously?
03:23Why do we need a Minecraft 2 when the first one's still a sandbox of endless possibilities?
03:27Just tweak and expand the original!
03:30Others are coming out swinging, accusing Notch of making a cash grab with the Minecraft sequel.
03:35That might be a hard accusation to dodge when Notch himself mentioned the potential
03:38profitability of the sequel in both of his announcement posts.
03:42Some people aren't interested in dragging Notch, but they aren't interested in Minecraft
03:462, either.
03:47In fact, many fans are pointing out that Notch himself seems to have more fresh ideas and
03:51genuine excitement for his roguelike project, and they're encouraging him not to derail
03:55that apparently in-development game because of an online poll.
03:59One user summed this up, writing,
04:01You seem more passionate about the traditional roguelike, so pursue that.
04:05A game is less likely to be washed up if stimulated by genuine interest rather than extrinsic
04:11motivation.
04:12Notch himself has already acknowledged that his Minecraft 2 might never make it to a release,
04:16so for now, even the truly curious fans will have to exercise some patience.
