Jodhpur: With Makar Sankranti, the festival of kite flying, approaching, Asgar Belim in Jodhpur is gaining recognition worldwide for his unique kites. While Kilte flying is traditionally not practised in Jodhpur, Asgar's intricate kites have earned him admiration, with some valued up to Rs 25,000. Known for his artistic craftsmanship, Asgar sources special cloth from abroad to create his distinctive designs.Asgar, a resident of Bamba Mohalla in Jodhpur has been involved in kite-making for over 30 years. His journey began in 1993 when he met an American friend, Toll Streeter, who inspired him to create kites that represented Indian culture. Asgar's passion for showcasing Indian traditions, rural life, and heritage through his kites led him to experiment with various techniques, designs, and materials.Over the years, Asgar's kites have been flown in over 35 countries, and he has won numerous awards at international kite flying competitions. One of his innovations includes flying LED kites during night shows, and on some occasions, he manages to fly as many as 15 LED kites simultaneously when the wind conditions are favourable.Asgar's family has been involved in kite-making crafts for over 200 years. Once employed in a government job, Asgar left it to follow his ancestral craft, taking it to new heights by using innovative techniques and materials. He uses high-quality materials like imported Mylar paper, Orcon paper, and ripstop nylon thread, making designs which showcase the richness of Indian art and culture to the world.

00:00In the last 30-35 years, I have been passionate about flying kites,
00:05showing Indian culture, and painting our villages.
00:08A friend of mine from America, a tall streeter, inspired me to do this.
00:14I went to Australia, South Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei,
00:22and when I came to Europe, I visited Germany, France, Switzerland,
00:25I visited almost 75% of Europe through a kite.
00:29The Prime Minister is a special person.
00:32No one appreciated me before him.
00:36I have been with him for almost 25 years.
00:4025 years ago, I shot a program with him in Ahmedabad.
00:44Since then, until he became the Prime Minister,
00:47I have been flying kites with him.
00:50He is a personality in himself.
00:52My culture, wherever I have been,
00:54whether I have been to Taiwan, China, Australia, New Zealand,
00:58he invited me there on the basis of my kite skills.
01:02There are many ordinary kites,
01:03thousands of people are going to make them,
01:05but if you have something special,
01:08then maybe I am a special person too.
01:10My mentor, Mr. Tall Streeter, is no more.
01:15He has become rest in peace.
01:17He came to my house and wrote a book on Indian kites.
01:23He gave me an appreciation that I should do something different.
01:26We went to some villages and he told me through photography,
01:33that I should start doing this.
01:34For the last 35-40 years, I have been working on this only.

01:42have said that we should finish it.
01:44My appeal to people is that if you stay in a family,
01:47if you come to the terrace for a few days,
01:50fly kites with children and turn off your mobile phone,
01:53then those moments in your life will be different.
