The Volunteers died on active service on 21 February 1984 in a gun battle with units of the British Army’s SAS.
During the battle, and despite being outnumbered, the IRA Volunteers shot dead SAS Sergeant Paul Oram and seriously wounded a second British soldier from Britain’s elite special forces.
Wounded themselves, the pair were subsequently executed by members of SAS back-up squads involved in the surveillance operation in the village.
