Biden announces Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal  US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday, January 15, that Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire and hostage deal that will end the fighting in Gaza and surge humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians.  In a separate statement, the White House quoted Biden as saying: "Today, after many months of intensive diplomacy by the United States, along with Egypt and Qatar, Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire and hostage deal. This deal will halt the fighting in Gaza, surge much needed-humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, and reunite the hostages with their families after more than 15 months in captivity." 00:00Good afternoon. It's a very good afternoon. Because at long last, I can announce a ceasefire

00:09and a hostage deal has been reached between Israel and Hamas.

00:15More than 15 months of conflict that began with Hezbollah's brutal massacre on October

00:207th. More than 15 months of terror for the hostages, their families, the Israeli people.

00:27More than 15 months of suffering by the innocent people of Gaza. Fighting in Gaza will stop

00:36and soon the hostages will return home to their families.

00:40The elements of this deal are what I laid out in detail this past May, which was embraced

00:47by countries around the world and endorsed overwhelmingly by the U.N. Security Council.

00:54The deal is structured in three phases. Phase one will last six weeks. It includes a full

01:01and complete ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces from all the populated areas of Gaza,

01:10and the release of a number of hostages held by Hamas, including women and elderly and

01:15the wounded. And I'm proud to say Americans will be part of that hostage release in phase

01:20one as well.

01:22And the Vice President and I cannot wait to welcome them home. In exchange, Israel will

01:28release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. And during phase one, the Palestinians can

01:33also return to their neighborhoods in all areas of Gaza.

01:38You know, during the next six weeks, Israel will negotiate the necessary arrangements

01:44to get phase two, which is a permanent end of the war. Let me say it again, a permanent

01:49end of the war. There are a number of details to negotiate to move from phase one to phase

01:56two. But the plan says if negotiations take longer than six weeks, the ceasefire will

02:03continue as long as the negotiations continue. Then Hezbollah, another of Hamas's strongest

02:12backers, was significantly weakened on the battlefield and its leadership was destroyed

02:18With our support, Israel negotiated a ceasefire with them. And after that, Lebanon finally

02:25elected a new president who's not who's not beholden to Hezbollah. And he can begin a

02:30new chapter for the Lebanese people.

02:35I'd also note this deal was developed and negotiated under my administration, but its

02:41terms will be implemented for the most part by the next administration. In these past

02:47few days, we've been speaking as one team. This has been time of real turmoil in the

02:53Middle East. But as I prepare to leave office, our friends are strong, our enemies are weak,

03:00and there's a genuine opportunities for a new future.
