01:11It's that New Year's resolution, I'm going to lose weight and join a gym. They never
01:14work because by now you're thinking, oh I was going to do it, but no.
01:24Good evening. Residents and politicians alike are debating the temporary closure of Tides
01:32Leisure Centre in Deal, ahead of a multi-million pound renovation to its 40-year-old pool and
01:37gym.
01:38Local sports groups, however, are worried that they won't be able to continue their
01:41practices without the centre, which would be closed for nearly two years during construction.
01:47Finn McDermid has been down to find out more.
01:51Nearly 800 residents have signed a petition to keep Tides Leisure Centre in Deal open
01:55as the council debate whether or not to close it for two years for refurbishments.
02:00According to one Labour councillor, leisure centres tend to have a lifespan of around
02:0440 years, which means that this centre, which was built in the 1980s, may need a refurbishment.
02:10But it's become a controversial issue both for local council and for local community
02:15groups.
02:16The real problem with the plans that the current Labour-controlled Dover District Council are
02:21proceeding with is that they're planning to shut it for nine months, with no operator
02:26in place to run it, no users allowed to use it at all, the tennis centre will be shut,
02:31the indoor sports hall will be shut, and they haven't even appointed a contractor to build
02:36the new centre yet. So there's no need to close it. And when the cabinet made that decision
02:40on Monday, they didn't give adequate consideration to the impact it would have on the many, many
02:44users of the sports hall and the tennis centre.
02:50Other groups who use the centre, like tennis and gymnastics clubs, will reportedly struggle
02:54to find adequate venues to continue their practices. But it isn't just limited to large
02:59groups, with multiple other sports and activity clubs worried about the closure's knock-on
03:03effect.
03:04Here we get free parking, and obviously we're on, it's for the over 55s, it's for the older
03:10group of people. We obviously don't want to have to spend money on car parking.
03:14Unfortunately, there's no other rehab at all.

03:24Dover Council had a majority of Labour councillors, but after one changed to the Conservative
03:29group and another became independent, both Labour and Conservative groups became equally
03:33weighted with 15 members each.
03:36While Labour want to close the centre by the 31st of March to complete the £19m renovation,
03:41the Conservative group took action to delay the move, using a call-in, meaning it now
03:45needs review via committee before any action can be taken.
03:49According to Dover Council's Labour group, the call-in is for the closure for nine months,
03:54not the provision of a new facility.
03:56The constitution quite rightly allows for call-in, and all parties have agreed to the
04:00constitution, so we support the ability to call in decisions and trust this will not
04:04delay the provision of a new centre-in-deal, which is much overdue and needed.
04:09While the political deadlock means the future of the centre isn't yet clear, a public meeting
04:13will take place on the 27th of this month, where residents and community groups can voice
04:18their concerns.

04:23A primary school in Tunbridge is asking for donations after its minibus was stolen.
04:27The Ford Transit van, which is used daily to pick up students from home with special
04:31educational needs, was taken from Longmead Community Primary on Tuesday evening.
04:36Police say an investigation is ongoing, however some of the students have taken matters into
04:41their own hands, as they've been designing wanted posters for the bus.
04:44Luckily, the school has been able to borrow a minibus from a nearby church, however a
04:48fundraising page has been set up with a target of £20,000.
04:53A man from Ashford's Facing being sent to prison after Border Force officers found a
05:00woman crammed inside the glove box of a car in an attempt to illegally enter the country.
05:05Reidar Curtis from Ashford was found guilty of assisting unlawful immigration alongside
05:09two other members of a smuggling gang.
05:11They were all found guilty at Manchester Crown Court this week.
05:14The discovery was made by officers when the car had crossed the Channel from France in
05:18June of 2022.
05:20That then led investigators to uncover an international smuggling network that took
05:25non-EU nationals through Europe and into the UK.
05:29A woman from Sheppey is calling for non-league football clubs to improve accessibility after
05:34she helped Sheppey United's Home Park to upgrade theirs.
05:38Penny Wood's 18-year-old son Harry has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair to get around.
05:43For years, Harry has struggled to enjoy himself at matches due to having to use the club's
05:47women's toilets with his mum.
05:50After the club's management heard of the family's problems, they hired Penny as their Disability
05:54and Inclusion Officer and they've since installed ramps, stairlifts and designed wheelchair
05:59space in the stands.
06:02It's hard work sometimes going to the away games.
06:06Harry needs to go to the toilet.
06:07You know, he's a young lad now.
06:09He doesn't want mum taking him into the ladies' toilet.
06:12Now our stadium allows not only our local community, but also our away supporters who
06:18may not travel to away games because they experience the same thing that we have and
06:22they can come along and enjoy the game as well.
06:25Animal shelters in Kent are facing a record high number of kittens being taken into their
06:30care.
06:31In particular, black cats.
06:32Well, they face longer waiting times to find new homes and data from the RSPCA shows that
06:37they're three times more likely to be taken into their care.
06:41They say that this is due to people having superstitions about the colour and that's
06:45something that Kristen Hawthorne has been speaking to Cats Protection about in Sittingbourne.
06:50Biggest number of cats we've got are black and white.
06:53On average, if you compare it with other colours, they may stay another two or three weeks.
07:01Black cats have long been connected to myths and legends, often unfairly seen as omens
07:06of bad luck.
07:07But today, these age-old superstitions could be costing them loving homes.
07:13The RSPCA revealed that black cats are three times more likely to be taken into their care.
07:19At Cats Protection in Sittingbourne, staff are facing record high intakes of kittens.
07:23It's been an absolute explosion.
07:26For instance, our maternity unit, we have ten pens there.
07:31Normally this time of the year it's completely empty, but this year, we've still, in January,
07:37we've still got six pens full up.
07:40Adrian told me he's been working here for 17 years, but in 2024 he's seen the highest
07:45amount of kittens coming into the centre.
07:48Amongst these kittens were black and black and white cats, which are often much harder
07:52to set up for adoption.
07:54Well, I think there's a number of reasons these days.
07:56I mean, superstition does play a role.
07:59I think also the mono-colour is an issue.
08:05People come and see lovely ginger and whites or tabbies and tortoises.
08:08But one of the biggest influences at the moment are online cats, particularly the designer
08:16cats, the Scottish Folds, which are all munchkins and, you know, one week and then it'll be
08:22the Savannahs, then it'll be the Bengals.
08:24So all of these factors contribute to making it harder to find a home for black cats and
08:31black and white cats as well.
08:33But how many people have superstitions about these cats?
08:37I went to Rochester to find out.
08:41For me, a cat is a cat, no matter what colour they are.
08:45I know that they say that black cats are superstitious and things, but that makes me want a black
08:49cat more because it makes it unique to me, I suppose.
08:52But yeah, I have noticed there are more black cats at the place that I volunteer at.
08:57I would have any colour cat, black or, you know, I've got no superstitions about them at all.
09:03No, I mean, I've heard of the black cat superstition, but generally speaking, I'm not someone who
09:07has any superstitions at all.
09:09I think you probably do find that with a black cat, you would kind of like think, oh, is
09:15my day going to be a good day if it runs across your path?
09:18So whether they bring luck, love, or lots of purrs, these cats definitely have a lot to offer.

09:33Well off the back of one of her best interviews ever with that cat was, is Kristen here now.
09:37Kristen, I've had a black cat in the past.
09:39I think they are one of the most beautiful cats.
09:42Definitely didn't bring me any sort of bad luck, but some people don't think the same.
09:45Tell me about some of these superstitions.
09:47Right, well, some of the superstitions, obviously we have the classic ones that if it crosses
09:51your path a certain direction, it's going to cause you bad luck.
09:54Another thing, people actually think that they're witches in disguise, which is quite
09:58interesting.
09:59Okay, right.
10:00However, they are actually good luck in a lot of places.
10:03In Japan, they're supposed to be symbols of love.
10:06In ancient Egypt, they represent protection.
10:10And in Scotland, they're apparently a sign of prosperity.
10:13So it's not all bad.
10:14So it's funny that the bad side has really held them back in that way.
10:18Yeah, definitely.
10:19And it's not the only issue that centres are facing.
10:21They've also had this influx of kittens.
10:23What can you tell me about that?
10:24Yes.
10:25So across Kent, he told me that across Kent, all of the cat shelters have been facing an
10:30influx of kittens.
10:32And in 2024, he said it was record high numbers.
10:36He's worked there for a long time.
10:37I said that in the package, that he's working there for 17 years and he said he's never
10:41seen anything like it.
10:43He did say that it was due to the veterinary provisions changing.
10:49But he does explain to me a little bit more why this is.
10:54It's multifaceted.
10:55I mean, a lot of vets, European vets went back after Brexit.
11:00So it put a strain on the veterinary profession.
11:03Obviously, the amount of people that took on pets during COVID meant that, you know,
11:09the vets are stretched because they've got so much more work to do.
11:13And then there's the cost.
11:14You know, obviously, the cost of living crisis has been through as well.
11:18And this has then led to, well, you know, do I get the cat neutered or do I feed my
11:23children?
11:24Well, Kristen, I mean, I'm looking at some of these pictures of these cute cats and I
11:28just want to take one home.
11:29Why aren't people taking them home?
11:31Well, like we said, it's not just superstition.
11:34A lot of people on social media, they like to have cats and pets that look good on camera.
11:38These ones, apparently, they don't reflect their personality as much, apparently, which
11:43is quite sad.
11:45But yeah, all these things really contribute to it.
11:48So I don't know.
11:49Of course, lots of other factors as well, including money, but lots of us to discuss
11:51after the break.
