00:00After the shutdown on January 19, other users are using the TikTok app again after President-elect Donald Trump announced that he will give a 90-day reprieve to TikTok.

00:13But what are the reasons why the US passed a law to shut down the TikTok application?

00:20First, the owner of TikTok is a Chinese firm that may have an issue with data privacy.

00:27Because a social media platform like TikTok is spreading personal information, personal data,

00:37and China has a national security law where all companies, tech companies in particular,

00:47if their government needs the information held by these platforms in the interest of their national security.

00:56And second, it is a threat to the national security of America.

01:00Aside from the Chinese government being able to access the personal data of US citizens, US users,

01:08they can also use it because of the popularity of TikTok, they can use that platform to spread propaganda.

01:18If TikTok was banned in the Philippines, it is likely that the content creator Sarah was affected.

01:24Half of her day is spent on Tiktok. She also earns from Tiktok.

01:30So if it's banned in the Philippines, it has a big effect on Sarah's income.

01:35It's big. Maybe almost half.

01:38In my brand deals, it reaches five to six digits a month.

01:45So if it's banned, the six digits will become five digits.

01:51Abby, an ER nurse, is also the one who uses Tiktok more often as an online platform.

01:56I consume Tiktok in the morning, when I wake up and the work hasn't started yet.

02:03Aside from being a nurse, Abby is also a content creator and earns from brands that are being endorsed online.

02:09If you endorse a brand, you can see more content on Tiktok compared to other social media.

02:20And if it's banned in the country of Tiktok?

02:22I think the biggest impact would be on those people who rely on Tiktok as a platform

02:32to provide them either their sole source of income or at least supplementary income.

02:39So that's where it has the biggest impact.

02:44But is it possible for a Tiktok ban to happen in the Philippines,

02:48where there are 49.09 million users according to the data of the Advertising Resources of ByteDance,

02:55which is owned by Tiktok?

02:57As of January 2024, that's the data.

03:01We're on the 8th highest number of Tiktok users in the world.

03:05It's the same here.

03:06The personal data of Filipinos is processed by a Chinese-based company.

03:11In the same way, if they want to use it to manipulate opinions,

03:18to influence the views of Americans using Tiktok.

03:24For now, we have a data privacy law that can be protected

03:28in case of a data privacy issue by social media companies like Tiktok.

03:33But...

03:34What's really lacking is the strong and effective enforcement of these laws.

03:39ByteDance has already said that they have no connection with the Chinese government.
