00:00I was really excited to be here.
00:29I was reached out to a couple of summers ago for a hat that's featured on my website
00:34at ericjavits.com, which is called Gondolier, I think it's still on there.
00:40And the First Lady, well, she wasn't First Lady at that point, she'd already been First
00:45Lady, but she loved that style and thought she might wear it for some other special event.
00:52I don't know what that event was, but that never came to be.
00:55She didn't end up wearing it, but still loved it.
00:57So that was the springboard, as well as another style that I forwarded to her for try on through
01:05her stylist, Hervé Pierre.
01:08And those two styles really were sort of a springboard to, you know, what you saw earlier
01:14today for the inauguration.
01:19Well, it's a classic boater.
01:26And although I didn't have direct contact with her throughout this process, her stylist
01:34was communicating to me, you know, the type of hat she envisioned.
01:39And you know, so I just, and I think that basically, it had to match the outfit, obviously,
01:48that was made in the same wool, silk, double-faced wool, silk as her coat.
01:54I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute, that I will faithfully execute.
02:01This was, you know, you know, sort of couture level workmanship.
02:06And I had to create the wooden block for this hat, because it would have taken too long
02:12to order, you know, a new wood block to the specifications needed.
02:16So what I did was I took existing crown and brim blocks, and I altered them myself.
02:22You know, I'd done shop classes since I was, you know, fourth and fifth grade.
02:27So I took care of that.
02:29And then from that wooden shape, I created the fabric panel patterns.
02:38And then, you know, cut it and stitch it all together by hand.
02:42I mean, there's probably less than 10% of machine sewing on that hat.
02:50For our country and world, and a determination to act in ways pleasing to you.
02:59Well, traditionally, you know, a hat should be worn all day.
03:04You don't take it off until you're changing for another occasion or, you know, whatever,
03:09until the event is over.
03:12I mean, you could see that her hair was organized around, you know, what the hat was, so.
03:28I found out when everyone else found out, and, you know, of course, I was very happy.
03:35I suspected, you know, she would wear it, but there was no guarantee.
03:40Someone did text it to me, but that's normal, you know, when you have a brim, you don't
03:51want to collide.
03:52And I'm sure there'll be plenty of kissing at some later time.
03:57I feel deeply honored and blessed.
04:12And I think it's incredible.
04:16You know, in my hands, it looks like a very sort of understated, humble hat.
04:22And, you know, when she put it on, and you saw it with the ensemble and all that, you
04:28know, just she, you know, her presence transformed it and made it something very powerful.
04:35And you would never, you know, if you just saw it on a hat stand somewhere, you would
04:39never see, you would never expect that would have that much impact.
04:45And that really just speaks to her presence and her beauty and her grace.
