Former UN Gaza Aid Envoy David Satterfield warns that Hamas will not be defeated through purely military means, but that a credible pathway to a permanent status resolution is necessary.

00:00I just want to ask you something actually about the release of the
00:04hostages. We did see that happen yesterday, three hostages were released.
00:09When they were released we saw those pictures of what appeared to be Hamas
00:15fighters surrounding the vehicles that were carrying the hostages as they were
00:21moved into Israel. Is this something that's really going to concern the US
00:27looking forward and Israel and what could this potentially mean for the
00:33future? You're quite right to draw attention to those images. The challenge
00:40of Gaza is a challenge which the previous administration has made quite
00:46clear over the past year plus that there can be no resolution to the problem of
00:53Hamas, this terrorist group and its dark nihilistic vision, through kinetic
00:58military means alone. It requires a political framework, a political horizon
01:04and the administration believed, I think correctly, that the only such horizon, not
01:09just for the people of Gaza, but for the people of Israel and the region as a
01:12whole, is a credible pathway to a negotiated permanent status resolution.
