00:00The Union of Consumers proposed a restaurant that would provide a walk-in service to workers on the Chinese New Year holiday

00:09in order to provide tips compared to raising the service charge.

00:14President of the Union of Consumers of Subang and Syah Alam Selangor, Jacob George,

00:19viewed the increase in the service charge as unlawful

00:23given that consumers pay other charges set by the government.

00:27He reviewed the statement of the Singapore-based coffee shop owner yesterday

00:32stating that there are businesses that will have a service charge of up to 15%

00:38compared to the current 10% on the Chinese New Year holiday.

00:43Meanwhile, the CEO of the Malaysian Consumer Union, Saravanan Thambirajah, said

00:49if a business raises the service charge,

00:52they should ensure that the surplus charge is transferred to the workers,

00:58especially if it is quoted as a service charge and not as an additional benefit.

01:04Saravanan also urged consumers to choose premises that have a clear price tag

01:09and avoid restaurants that have an unlawful service charge.
