January 6 riots will always be seen in a negative light, even though it was not an insurrection but a protest gone wrong, President Donald Trump’s former attorney Alan Dershowitz says.

00:00Looking back at January 6th, and just to wrap up this segment,
00:05it's been described by some people as being one of the darkest days
00:08in modern US history.
00:10Do you think, as some in the Biden administration suggested,
00:13we're going to see over the next four years
00:15an attempt to sort of rewrite exactly what happened on that day?
00:22In a democracy, you can't rewrite history
00:24because the media has the right to present its alternative narrative.
00:28I think that January 6th will always be seen by decent people
00:33in a negative light, but it was exaggerated.
00:36It wasn't an insurrection.
00:38It was a protest gone wrong and exaggerated,
00:42just like I think the Black Lives Matter protests
00:45were in Oregon and other places.
00:49There's equal fault on all sides here.
00:52And what we have to do is move us back to a time where protests are fine.
00:56Indeed, they're encouraged.
00:58It's part of our First Amendment to have protests,
01:00but not violent protests and not intimidation, not threats.
01:05So I'm hoping that the new administration will keep its word
01:09about the end of lawfare
01:11and move us toward more democratic forms of protests
01:17and more equal application of the law.
01:18I think that's possible.
01:19I think we learned a very, very hard lesson
01:22from both January 6th and the application of lawfare.
01:26And I hope that lesson is learned and applied.
