Alan Pattullo reflects on an emotional night at Old Trafford, with Rangers enduring late heartbreak following a Bruno Fernandes winner in injury time.
Transcript
00:00Well, here we are at Old Trafford, Manchester United, two Rangers, one.
00:10I'm Alan Patullo, Scotsman football writer, and I've filed a match report about an hour and a half ago,
00:17which, yeah, is a fairly frantically written piece, trying to get the bones of the story across.
00:30The bones of the story, which are Man United managing to secure a very late win over a Rangers,
00:40a very brave Rangers side, who equalised through serial deathers with two minutes of normal time left.
00:49That was following Jack Butland's moment of catastrophe.
00:54Shortly after half-time, he punched the ball into his own net.
00:59It's an emotional night here at Old Trafford.
01:02Old Trafford, as you can see behind me, it's the famous Holy Trinity statue, one of whom is Denis Law.
01:13The club is mourning, Man United are mourning, we're all mourning.
01:19Scots are mourning, British football fans are mourning, the world is mourning.
01:26He was on the front of the match programme tonight, of course,
01:30tonight being the first time Manchester United have been able to publish a tribute to their former striker in the match programme.
01:40His death came too late to be included in the programme for the Brighton game on Sunday, which Manchester United lost.
01:51They managed to secure a very late victory this evening, perhaps earned some redemption from their fans.
02:00I think the same can be said for Rangers, actually.
02:02Such a young Rangers team out there.
02:05They finished, I think, with two teenagers in the team, as well as a 21-year-old in Ross McCausland and Leon King.
02:14Another 21-year-old came on as well.
02:16For their heavily patched-up team, Philippe Clement's injuries and worries are certainly not receding.
02:24They seem unrelenting.
02:26Let's see who comes back for the weekend or who's available for the weekend.
02:32But it was a very unfamiliar-looking 11 that finished tonight here in Manchester.
02:38I'll be filing some more copies tomorrow from Manchester.
02:43Who knows when I'll get back home with a storm barrelling into the country.
02:48Same problem, obviously, for the Rangers fans here who are possibly stranded for another 24 hours.
02:56Anyway, we shall see what tomorrow brings.
03:00But as for tonight, a brave Rangers performance which was undone at the death by Bruno Fernandes with a fine finish.
03:11Keep logged into Scotsman.com and I'll be bringing more reports from here tomorrow.
