00:03They have too many grapes.
00:04According to Wine Spectator, consumer wine spending is down,
00:08meaning wine producers have inventory backing up.
00:11Wine Business reports that in November alone,
00:13direct winery-to-consumer sales dropped 12% over the same period last year.
00:18That's all in addition to a surplus of grapes from the 2024 harvest season.
00:22But what does this indicate for wine connoisseurs?
00:24Well, in the short term, it means that now
00:26is a great time to get a deal on some of California's finest wines.
00:29Many of the region's vintners are now offering wild discounts
00:32to get you into their tasting rooms,
00:34with over 80 of them offering a two-for-one tasting during January.
00:38This has long been referred to as the Napa Neighbor Discount,
00:41available to locals only,
00:42but now they're extending it to anyone living in California.
00:45This is just the latest indicator of a changing trend
00:48in drinking habits amongst younger generations,
00:50with Gen Z spending less on alcohol in general.
00:53Wine and grape broker Glenn Proctor told Wine Spectator,
00:56it's a tough situation for vintners,
00:58adding, we're kind of going through some resets,
01:00trying to understand where we're going to go in the future.
