At approximately noon local time, eighteen-year-old student Pekka-Eric Auvinen ( June 4 , 1989 - November 7 , 2007 ) opened fire at the Jokela school. Some students broke windows to get out and police surrounded the school. According to reports, nine people, including the perpetrator, were killed in the shooting, six men and three women. Five of the victims were students, one was a student, one was a nurse, and the eighth was the headmistress. According to Finnish authorities, the perpetrator was hospitalized in critical condition after attempting to commit suicide with his own gun. He was arrested at approximately 14:30 local time. He later died of his injuries.
