00:00Hello there, welcome to another episode of Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
00:05Remember, in the month of January, we're thinking about various forms of New Year resolution
00:10in order to improve your sexual and reproductive health.
00:14What is more important than cutting down on smoking?
00:25So smoking is well known to cause cancer, especially lung cancer and bladder cancer.
00:30However, smoking also causes some significant adversity in your sexual and reproductive
00:36health.
00:37Let's dwell into the actual diagnosis itself that how smoking can cause erectile dysfunction.
00:45In fact, smoking itself is well known to cause something called atherosclerosis.
00:51This is when there's a hardening of the vessels.
00:54Initially, it might affect the vessels supplying the penis itself, and people who smoke are
01:00likely to have erectile dysfunction due to atherosclerosis.
01:05Apart from that, there are a lot more evidence to suggest that smoking can affect something
01:10called the nitric oxide system.
01:13The nitric oxide is crucial for vasodilation, so smoking will block the nitric oxide cycle
01:20and reduce the dilations of the blood vessels as well.
01:24So double whammy.
01:26Increased smoking frequency also will have a reduction on somebody's libido because that
01:34will have an impact on the blood supply and vasculature to the testicle, and that will
01:40affect the production of testosterone.
01:43Clearly, another cell which is very sensitive to smoking is the sperm quality.
01:49So we know men who smoke at least two to five cigarettes a day will have significant
01:57reduction on sperm volume, sperm quality such as the number, the morphology, and the motility.
02:05So with that in mind, smoking causes triple whammy in your sex and reproductive health.
02:10You know cessation is crucial.
02:13So why don't you take the whole month of January to contemplate how to have a New Year
02:19resolution to reduce smoking in the future, and then to carry on sustainably for the next
02:2512 months of the year and making 2025 a very healthy non-smoking year, and we'll have a
02:33much better sexual and reproductive health.
02:36If you're interested in quitting smoking but thinking that vape or vaping might be helping
02:43you to reduce smoking and might have a positive impact on your sexual health, then you have
02:48to think twice because vaping itself is not really the lesser of two evils.
02:55Stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
