TENBY’s Steps2Health walkers usually walk part of Brunel’s Way in Neyland for their first walk of the year, but not in 2025, because of a lack of facilities.
Instead, they stayed in Tenby for variations on their sea views walk. It was dry but cold, grey and windy. Everyone needed to walk briskly just to stay warm. Brian backed by Jane, led the Speedies around the town, finishing with a lap of the North Beach. Chris, supported by Marlene, went around the other way. The two groups crossed on the North Walk, but most of them met again in the Old Chapel, where the New Year welcome was as warm as ever.
On Saturday, January 11, 36 hardy walkers turned up for a beach walk on a bleak winter’s morning. Kym, backed by Brian, took the Speedies into the bracing wind, across the South Beach towards Giltar, returning to town via the Esplanade and South Parade. Meanwhile the Steadies, headed by Annie and supported by Chris, walked to Castle Beach, the harbour and the relatively sheltered North Walk. Afterwards, everyone met up at the Scout and Guide Hall for a pre-AGM meeting. The two Barbaras provided very welcome refreshments, as a fundraiser towards the upkeep of the hall.
On January 18, the leaders were surprised by the high turnout of hardy walkers, on a cold winter’s morning, for the walk from Penally to Tenby. Having changed the planned routes because of glorious Pembrokeshire mud, all 36 walkers took the path from the station to the South Beach. There they split up, Jane backed by Kym, led the Speedies up on to Giltar, circled the headland, and returned to Tenby on the beach. Donna with Marlene, took the Steadies across the very stony beach, back to the South Beach car park and up to the Esplanade. Invigorated and happy after the walk, it was time for everyone to seek refreshments and shelter from the cold January wind.
Saturday 25th was a glorious winter’s morning, ideal for happy social walking. This was all the more amazing as the day was sandwiched between Storms Eowyn and Herminia, vying for the title of “Most awful”. 35 walkers turned out at Battery Gardens, in the pleasant sunshine. Brian, backed by Jane, led the Speedies via the Green and Butts Field to the Croft. Marlene, supported by Annie, followed behind, but soon lost sight of the lead group. From the Croft, the Speedies turned left up to Allen’s View, while the Steadies in their turn went right, via the zigzag to the harbour. When the Speedies returned from admiring the view, the Steadies had all dispersed in search of refreshments. This brought to an end the club’s January walks, with spring in the offing for the month ahead.
