00:00Leprosy or ketone is a chronic bacterial infection that affects our skin.
00:04And following the World Leprosy Day, it is important to continue the awareness and support for this.
00:10That's right, Dian.
00:11We will now be joined by the dermatologist, Dr. Catherine Joy Sayo Aguilingue.
00:17Good morning. Welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:19Good morning.
00:26Our very beautiful doctor, Dr. Joy.
00:30Dr. Joy, let's first explain what is leprosy or ketone.
00:35And how does it affect the skin and body of a person?
00:38Leprosy or Hansel's disease or more commonly known as ketone
00:44is a disease caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium leprae or Mycobacterium lepromatosis.
00:53So the main thing that is affected here is the skin.
00:56It can also affect the peripheral nerves or the roots.
01:00And sometimes, it can also affect the mucosa of the upper respiratory tract and the eyes.
01:05Alright, Dr. Joy. How does a person become infected with this disease?
01:09And how long does it take for the symptoms to show?
01:12So the mode of transmission of leprosy is through respiratory droplets.
01:17So if we remember, it's like COVID through droplets.
01:20So for example, if we inhale the air that has microbes from speaking,
01:28sneezing, coughing, or sneezing of a person with leprosy who is not yet on medication,
01:35we can become infected.
01:37But we have to take note that the people who become infected here or the at-risk
01:43are those who are always with the patient.
01:47So it doesn't mean that if we are with a person with leprosy, we will become infected.
01:57It's not like that.
01:58There needs to be a prolonged exposure with a close contact.
02:03Okay, so it's not comparable to COVID-19, right?
02:06Where you can just walk or touch and you'll become infected.
02:09But when we talk about leprosy,
02:12because there is medicine here, I don't know if there are still many cases of this now.
02:19Over the years, will this decrease?
02:23Since there is medicine and it's treatable.
02:26Over the years, yes, it will decrease.
02:28But unfortunately, there are still many of us who are not allowed to see
02:35because we are ashamed of the symptoms that they present.
02:39Another reason is that it's underreported because it's not detected immediately.
02:45Especially our brothers and sisters from the provinces,
02:48they don't see it immediately or they don't check it immediately.
02:53That's why our census is not decreasing.
03:00In fact, it's increasing.
03:02Okay, what are the main symptoms that should be monitored?
03:06Okay, so the symptoms of leprosy, first of all,
03:09there can be white or red patches on the skin
03:13that usually means that the person is pregnant or the feeling is reduced.
03:18Second, there can also be bumps or nodules on the skin.
03:23Third, we can also have swollen or thick roots
03:30that usually means that the person is pregnant
03:35or sometimes the muscles on the affected part of the nerve weaken.
03:42So those are the common symptoms.
03:45Okay, doctor, how is this medicine? Is it expensive and how long does it last?
03:51Okay, so once diagnosed, the medicine for leprosy is what we call MDT or multidrug therapy.
03:59So this is a combination of three antibiotics.
04:03So it comes in a blister pack.
04:06So a blister pack is good for one month of medication.
04:10The three medicines are already there.
04:12And it also includes what you will drink every day.
04:15So this is free.
04:17That's very important.
04:18We repeat, the Department of Health provides free medication.
04:23Usually, it lasts for 6 months or 12 months or more.
04:29So it's free.
04:30Yes, sir.
04:31Well, doc, Joy, is leprosy really contagious?
04:34And how can we avoid it?
04:38Okay, so first of all, it's not contagious.
04:42In fact, 95% of the population says that it's not contagious
04:47because our immune system can fight the microbial.
04:52And again, we say that it's not through casual contact
04:57where you shake hands or hang out with a patient,
05:01then it's contagious.
05:02Again, for it to be contagious, you need a long exposure of a close contact.
05:08And if you have leprosy, as long as the treatment started,
05:13so one month of treatment, it means that it's not contagious.
05:18So it's not something that's really scary.
05:21It's very contagious.
05:22This disease has been around for a long time, right?
05:24It's only biblical times.
05:25Yes, sir.
05:26You can read about it in the Ketong.
05:28But is the treatment that we have here in the Philippines
05:31the most advanced that we have in Western countries?
05:356 months, 12 months, the patient can recover?
05:38Yes, sir. This is a standard treatment.
05:40This is what the World Health Organization dictated.
05:44So in all other countries, the treatment is the same.
05:47Is there a recommended dietary requirement
05:51for an individual with leprosy or ketone?
05:55Ma'am Diane, there is no specific dietary requirement
06:01or specific dietary restrictions.
06:05But in general, what we advise is that the immune system should be strong
06:11because you need to fight the microbial.
06:14So what we usually advise is vitamin supplementation.
06:18So it's good that there are no nutritional deficiencies
06:21because of course, it weakens or damages the immune system.
06:24So we recommend vitamin A, C, D, E, vitamin B12,
06:30or minerals like zinc, selenium, and magnesium.
06:34This is obtained from multivitamin capsules.
06:38But of course, it can also be obtained from food.
06:41For example, vitamin A, carrots, papaya, vitamin C, citrus,
06:46and then vitamin D from egg and sunlight.
06:49And the minerals that we get from green leafy vegetables.
06:53And we also always advise patients to avoid being too tired,
06:58workaholic, or too stressed
07:01to avoid complications like leprosy reactions.
07:07Lastly, for the awareness of our countrymen,
07:11what is your message, doctor?
07:13As a dermatologist and advocate for leprosy awareness,
07:18I just want to remind our brothers and sisters who have leprosy,
07:22I hope that once we are diagnosed,
07:26we should follow the treatment,
07:28do regular follow-up, comply with treatment,
07:31and of course, finish the medicine.
07:34And of course, we will not be neglected by the Lord.
07:37And for the rest of our countrymen,
07:40to our listeners,
07:42we would like to say that
07:45our brothers and sisters who have leprosy,
07:48we should accept them in society.
07:51As Sir Audrey said earlier,
07:53from history and biblical times,
07:55there has been social stigma and discrimination
07:58surrounding leprosy.
08:00But now, in 2025, it is still there.
08:03So, let us accept them in society.
08:06Let us not oppress them.
08:08They are also normal people just like us
08:11who have the right to live normally
08:13and have the right to work.
08:15So, instead of shunning them from the society,
08:20we should give them love and support from their families,
08:24friends, and of course, from the government.
08:26What Dr. Joy said is very good.
08:28Thank you for sharing your tips and information
08:32regarding leprosy.
08:34Again, we are joined by Dr. Catherine Joy Sayo Aguiling.
08:38Thank you again, Dr. Joy.
