In 2023, over 7,000 student and exchange visitors from India overstayed their visas in the United States, according to an expert who testified before US lawmakers. Jessica M. Vaughan from the Center for Immigration Studies presented this information to the US House Committee on the Judiciary during a hearing on "Restoring Immigration Enforcement in America."

Brazil, China, Colombia, and India were among the countries with more than 2,000 citizens overstaying their student or exchange visas, with India having the highest number. Vaughan also noted that 32 countries had student and exchange visitor overstay rates exceeding 20%.

She suggested various immigration policy reforms, including changes to the H-1B visa program, to address these concerns. The F and M visa categories, which cover students and vocational trainees, reportedly have the highest overstay rates among all temporary visa categories.
