00:00Oscar nominee Carla Sofía Gascón is catching heat for controversial takes she posted online
00:04in recent years about everything from Islam to George Floyd.
00:09The Emilia Perez's stars' posts on X started to make the rounds early Thursday morning and
00:14were deleted not soon after. Less than a month after Floyd was murdered in Minnesota in 2020,
00:19inciting nationwide Black Lives Matter rallies, Gascón shared these words, saying,
00:24"'I truly believe that very few people ever cared about George Floyd,'
00:27and calling him a drug addict and a hustler."
00:32Later that year, she took aim at Muslims in her native Spain when she wrote this post that says,
00:36in part, "'Sorry, is it just my impression or are there more and more Muslims in Spain? Every time
00:41I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their
00:45skirts down to their heels.'" Regarding Islam, she suggested a ban. She wrote,
00:52"'Until we ban religions that go against European values and violate human rights,
00:57such as Islam, under the protection of freedom of worship, we will not end part
01:00of the huge problem we face. Faith manipulates those who cling to faith.'" Gascón's posts were
01:05in Spanish and have been translated for this story. Many social media users expressed surprise
01:10that amid an always-heated awards season race, the posts remained up on the site for as long
01:15as they did. The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to reps for Gascón and Netflix for comment.
01:19Gascón made history as the first trans person to be nominated for Best Actress,
01:23while her film, Emilia Perez, topped this year's awards with 13 nominations.
