Investigators work in aftermath of Washington plane crash on Potomac River

Investigators aboard boats on Jan. 30, 2025 collect and analyze debris from the mid-air collision the previous day between an American Airlines jet and a US Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The disaster occurred as the passenger jet was approaching to land at Reagan. Radio communications between the air traffic control tower and the Black Hawk showed the helicopter crew knew the plane was in the vicinity. More than 60 people were feared dead and the District of Columbia fire chief said 28 bodies had been recovered from the river so far.
