00:00The trade deadline is looming. There is a fraud alert from a texter on the Subaru of New England
00:06text line for Wiggy. I'll read it verbatim. 9-7-8 texter says Wiggy wanted to ship Zdeno
00:15Chara up out of here, but he doesn't want to move Brad Marchant. Fraudulent!
00:22Yeah, I don't know where they got that from. I was, listen, I was going to ship
00:28Bergeron up out of here. And pasta. And pasta. So I'm all for if you can get
00:36something for, like, when you look at this team, realistically, in your opinion,
00:42other than Swayman, is there anybody untouchable?
00:48Well, the argument has been that it's. Goalie Bob.
00:52Besides Goalie Bob. The argument has been that David Pasternak was untouchable.
00:59But would you move him if you could get a haul for him?
01:04Do you have to be in a full giant rebuild at this point? Do you believe?
01:11Or can you deal a piece or two and somehow cobble it together and improve? Well,
01:17I think everybody believes you're in a kind of more of a rebuild.
01:20Well, Cam Neely calls it a called it a retool or a retool.
01:25So in the retool sense, could you move a guy like pasta that would bring you back? Maybe another
01:35talented player that's not perform or maybe is not performing at the level or is performing,
01:43but maybe wants to change the scenery. I think Bruins fans have been reluctant to move on from
01:51David Pasternak. They certainly have an issue with his performance in the playoffs. Right.
01:55Which they whine about. Right. But if you're a Bruins fan, tell me right now,
02:01are you OK? Because that's where you're going to get the most value. Right.
02:05And you're, you know, you're going to say goodbye to a true goal scorer and a guy who is at the,
02:18you know, at the top of the NHL potential wise when it comes to that. Right. So you better be
02:23getting a significant haul for that. But that's what you want. That's really where the most value
02:30is. Yes, shy. Well, no, I'm just like looking at the contract. I don't know if you can move
02:36him without his permission. So no. So what I think he doesn't have a no trade until year six
02:44and it's like an eight team approved list. Year seven is a 10 team approved list in year eight
02:49is a full or a 10 team no trade. So I think he has a full no trade up until year six. So I don't
02:56even think you can move him. All right. We get seven, seven, four. Texter says Swayman is the
03:01first move they would make. Like they want to say goodbye to Jeremy Swayman. What's more important,
03:08pasta or Swayman in the postseason? You have to get to the postseason. Right. And as long as
03:15Swayman is the same Swayman we've seen in the past, but he hasn't. Has Jeremy Swayman been
03:19what you thought he would be this season? No, no, no, no, no, he hasn't, but he's been pretty
03:26good in this. And I know it's a, it's a short sample size in the playoffs. We've seen a larger
03:31sample size of pasta. If you're asking me where the Bruins going and what are they doing? All
03:37right. Are you saying then there's two guys that are untouchable? Is it pasta and Swayman?
03:42I think it has to be. I don't think, I think, I think both of them have no trade clauses. I
03:46think you physically can't move them regardless. Okay. So if they both have no trade clauses,
03:50then I guess we're just speaking on hypotheticals. When it comes to Geeky and the way he's playing,
03:55how much credit do you give David Pasternak for that? A decent amount. Like I think you run the
04:01risk of losing that. Yeah. If you say goodbye to him. Like to me, the guys that you would be
04:05targeting to move right now would be a guy like Brad Marshand, Charlie Coyle. I think you could
04:11flip Morgan Geeky for something. I don't know that you can move Charlie Coyle. It doesn't,
04:15he have a team restriction or something. Yeah. I think it's like a limited no trade,
04:18but he's in, I'm pretty sure it's the final year of his deal. So there's like,
04:20I think it's either 10 or 12 teams that you can probably trade him too.
04:25Because we always have this conversation, whether we did it last year with Jason Tatum or we do it,
04:33did it with Jalen Brown. And you, you start to say, okay, pasta is an unbelievable player.
04:41He's unbelievably talented, but as he lived up to your expectations as a Bruins fan in the
04:51post-season, no. So do you get to the point and go, all right, he hasn't been able to live up to
04:59it. Is there a way that we can get a massive haul? And then you're starting with a new guy
05:07because you're going to get a haul back from him that might be able to live up to the expectations
05:13of what a superstar should be. Yeah. You, you might think he is disappointed in the playoffs,
05:18but like 40 goal scorers don't just grow on trees. This is not a guy you can like to me,
05:23it's, it's Pasternak and Swayman are the untouchables and McAvoy, you would have to
05:27get an absolute massive haul for if you're trading him. Like those to me are the three guys
05:32that you have to keep. And at this point build around, I mean, Pasternak is only 28
05:36Swayman's pretty young. McAvoy is really young. Like that's to me, that's the core you have to
05:40build around going forward. And that's why I'm saying that you have to make the decision that
05:44it's a legit full rebuild. If you're going to part with guys on the only line that you production
05:52wise that is doing anything. Yeah. And exactly. And I don't think they will. Like, I think if
05:58they trade any of those guys, it would be geeky, like pasta and Zaka to me are probably staying
06:03because Pasternak really likes Zaka and, but geeky, you might be able to flip for something
06:07to a playoff team, uh, cause he's cheap and he's, he's playing really well.
06:11I would just say if Jacobs, whoever chairman or the son don't sell, it is strictly to pad
06:20their wallets and not to improve the team because we all agree, even if they get in the back doors,
06:25the eight seed, they're not getting past round one. So you're doing all of this for two home gates,
06:31which is incredibly short sighted. And that was always the gripe with the Bruins. When I was a
06:37kid that they would do enough to get to the playoffs, get a couple more days of people
06:42parking and go to the concessions and sitting in those seats. But it was never championship driven.
06:47If you get an offer for Marshawn, that will benefit you in the future. You are
06:52absolutely doing the wrong thing. If you don't make the deal,
06:54right. But Marshawn's not going to be a rebuild asset that you have. That's going to get you a,
07:01but he's going to bring you something back. If you're really rebuilding and you're looking at,
07:06all right. And I understand, but the question becomes the Swaymans, the McAvoys, the pasta,
07:14those guys are going to bring you back halls where you now start to say, okay,
07:20we're rebuilding and we're going in a different direction.
07:24Yeah. I think they're afraid to tell their fans that they're going to rebuild.
07:28That's why cam calls it a retool. Like I, I, I think teams are always afraid to like the Patriots
07:35were afraid to say that. Yeah. Right. But then I haven't had to rebuild in 20 years. It's okay.
07:40Like that happens. You can't just expect to have sustained success for 40 years.
07:45Have you talked to anybody who is like anybody who's lived here their entire life?
07:50They don't expect that, but remember that's not okay.
07:54That's the reality of it. Like ask every other franchise on the planet.
07:58Right. And we don't hold the Bruins franchise to a higher standard when it comes to,
08:08as Bruins fans, we can be more content with, all right, they made the playoffs,
08:13right. Run it back next year. I don't think people were content though,
08:16when you have the best regular season record ever, but do you think they get criticized
08:20and you get bounced as much as the Patriots or the Red Sox or even the Celtics,
08:27not the Red Sox, but the Patriots, it's starting to get to that level.
08:30I think when it comes to the Bruins, the Red Sox get criticized harder than everybody else.
08:34And we know the reasons behind that, but I think that the Bruins in the past got,
08:37you're right, got a pass from fans this past season. I feel like we are at the same level
08:43or approaching the same level as the Crafts and the Patriots.
08:47Courtney, I love you to death, sis, but you're out of your mind on this one. You look at since
08:522018, the last time the Patriots have won a Super Bowl, the criticism of this organization,
08:58whether it was Belichick, whether it was Craft, anything, rightfully so, because they haven't
09:05been able to win, where when you look at the Bruins and you look at the fan criticism,
09:12frustration, it's there, but it is nowhere near the level of the other three teams
09:18when they don't do well, especially in the post-season. It is not even close.
09:24This is Hunter from New Hampshire. Hey, Hunter.
09:27Hey, how's it going?
09:28What's up?
09:29I just want to comment on this pasta tray talk, and I gave a shot, I'm here. First off, Wiggy,
09:35you keep mentioning bringing up pasta for a trade. You can't name a single person who you
09:40would want in return for pasta. He has one of the best goal scores in the NHL. So Shyam is right.
09:45It's pasta, Swayman, McAvoy. That is your top three. That is who you build around on this team.
09:52Everyone else can be replaced, including Marshan, who was my favorite. But the point is, you're not
09:57going to get anything good enough in return from a guy like pasta. Take yourself better. You have
10:02nothing in the NHL to bring up. There's not really enough draft picks to be building on this,
10:08so we have to keep your three best players you have, and that's your core to be able to move on.
10:14Without pasta, your offense is going to dwindle even worse. I know it looks bad as it is,
10:18but he's the only thing there that gives it a spark at all.
10:23It was the absolute right thing to do, but they screwed themselves a little bit by going all in
10:28and adding when they added because they thought they were going to win the cup.
10:32Yeah, but I'll never get on a team for doing that.
10:35What's that? No, I won't either. It was the right thing to do. What, Hunter?
10:39If you think about it, we got pasta at a pretty decent bargain because the cap just keeps going
10:43up and up. If you look around at teams like Edmonton, it's McDavid and Dreisaitl. Boom,
10:48there's their core. You have other teams like the Wilds who have Kaprizov. If you don't move
10:54on from a guy like Kaprizov, that's who they're building around. So if you get rid of pasta,
10:57then you're back to nothing. Then you're like, oh, we have Matty Potrak for our future.
11:02Pasta's still young, and you got to get the right piece with him.
11:07Obviously, my dream scenario to get out of peace on this team, which is a dream because it's never
11:13likely to happen, would be Willy Nylander because Nylander and Pasta were very good
11:18friends through juniors, and they still are very good buddies. I think if those two were on the
11:22same team together, it would be a tear down from McDavid and Dreisaitl, but looking at something
11:28like that with their chemistry. Another thing with this Bruins team, everyone likes to freak
11:33out about it. I get it. It's a really bad season. Schoenman's not playing great. Lindholm's not
11:37playing great, but hockey has so much chemistry that requires to be able to be good. I think
11:42we're being too premature with this season. We need to relax a little bit. I know they're not
11:49really a contender-contender, but they are in the playoff push. With them playing so poorly,
11:55we judge them every day with how bad they play, but yet they're still able to make the playoffs.
11:59If we just be patient with what we have, we don't even have a real coach right now.
12:04There's still an interim coach. We need to get that real coach and then make the right pieces.
12:09I think it's just a lot of nickel and diamond with these little guys like Ike and Brazo and
12:14all those kind of players that need to be switched in and out, but a guy like Pasta,
12:17it's just kind of stupid to me to be able to move on from a guy like him.
12:20Making the playoffs is no longer good enough for me.
12:25Well, for you though, but I don't think it's the same way for everybody else.
12:29And he brings up some really good players in Dreisaitl and McDavid. Maybe there is some
12:36fire to Keith's report where does Pasta need to be on a line with somebody that can really
12:44take him to that next level or elevate his ability to continue to be that goal scorer,
12:52but also elevate him in the playoffs? Because I'm not saying you're getting rid of Pasta
12:56and you're not getting another elite player in return. I'm just saying he or McAvoy or Swayman,
13:05those are the guys that are going to get you the elite players and another goal scorer who
13:10might be looking for a change of scenery. Okay. This is Sean from the soon to be 51st state of
13:18Canada. Hello, Sean. Hello. What's up? Can't wait to be part of the state.
13:27Abolished income. What would be the biggest benefit if you were part of America?
13:32If Trump abolishes the income tax, for sure. Okay. All right. Yeah, that would be a cool one.
13:38What about the free health care though? Doesn't Canada get like everybody gets free?
13:43We got to keep the free health care. Now, don't get me wrong. It's not good health care,
13:46but it's free. That's true. I mean, no offense to Tim Hortons, but we got a better,
13:56we have Duncan here. So that's a benefit. I can't wait to try it. I'm not allowed to
14:01the states at the moment, but we're getting there. Okay. What's up? Okay. I'm a Leafs fan
14:08and a Patriots fan. Okay. Sorry. So I watched the show every day. I'm a diehard Leafs fan.
14:13So I'm sitting there with an idea. What about Marner for Pasternak?
14:22Again, I think that the idea is if you say rebuild, I don't know that you want to just
14:28go one for one. No, no, no, it's not. The Leafs would have to add due to Pasternak's good deal.
14:34Right. Cause you're going to have to find Marner. So we would have to add probably a Matthew Nyes.
14:40Yeah. I don't know. Is there a reluctance on the Bruins part to do anything with
14:48the Maple Leafs or that doesn't matter? Probably. Yeah. Probably. Yeah.
14:53Um, I'm just sitting here. Well, that's the question. Well, that's the question that I'm
14:57asking. And like, you know, somebody who's more in depth into the hockey world than I am,
15:03is there a way where you could be like, all right, you're moving pasta. I know he brought up the
15:10Mariner guy from, um, uh, Toronto, but like you're moving pasta for somebody of that caliber,
15:17like an Austin Matthews that might be, you could say, okay, we'll give you pasta plus this, this,
15:23this, and you know, or we'll give you Matthews and a few bit, a few things more. And you give
15:28us posture and, you know, X, Y, and Z is what I'm saying. Are there opportunities out there
15:34where you're kind of changing who your new superstar or your new, um, like elite goal
15:44scorer is. Yeah. Right. Is there, are there opportunities out there like that, that Bruins
15:49fans would say, all right, I would entertain that. Yep. Well, it will get interesting.
15:54Bruins lose again. If they could just avoid the third period, as I said earlier, everything would
16:00be fine, but you can talk about that all day long here on Boston sports, original WEI.
