00:00The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder of the commercial plane
00:05that was hit by a helicopter in Washington, D.C. in America has been recovered.
00:09A Filipino official of the PNP is one of more than 60 victims.
00:15This is Joseph Morong.
00:21The girl doesn't stop crying while her father, Colonel Tarjentino Malavit Jr., is saying goodbye to her.
00:27Bye bye, I love you.
00:30Malavit left for his 12-day official trip.
00:37He was hoping to return to the Philippines by February 2, but he couldn't make it home.
00:42Malavit's plane was hit by a Black Hawk helicopter of the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C.
00:49The Philippine National Police mourns the tragic loss of Police Colonel Tarjentino and Malavit,
00:57who served with honor, integrity, and dedication throughout his career.
01:05We extend our deepest condolences to his bereaved family, loved ones, and colleagues.
01:13Graduate of the PNP-A Class of 1998,
01:1751-year-old Malavit is the head of the Supply Management Division of the PNP.
01:22He's in the U.S. to inspect the more than 2,000 all-purpose vests purchased by the PNP from India.
01:28In a report, the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Philippines in the U.S. to the PNP,
01:32the Washington Police identified Malavit based on the passport obtained from his body.
01:37But his family is still waiting for him to come here to the Philippines to officially recognize his body.
01:43The PNP informed the family that Colonel Malavit is here and is helping them to go to the U.S.
01:50so that his relatives can return to the Philippines.
01:53All the PNP can do is to help Colonel Malavit to return to his family.
02:03One of Malavit's relatives was recovered by the authorities.
02:08The work is now shifted to a recovery mission. Sadly, there are no survivors.
02:15Our prayers are with you now, and in the days to come, we'll be working very, very diligently.
02:21Sixty-seven passengers boarded the airplane and helicopter,
02:25including some figure skaters who won the ISU European Figure Skating Championships in Tallinn, Estonia.
02:31Please join us now in a moment of silence as we think of those who have been lost and their loved ones.
02:41The tragedy continues.
02:44The cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder of the airplane were retrieved.
02:48It is expected that a preliminary report on the incident will be released within 30 days.
02:54According to the military, the maximum altitude is 200 feet for the helicopter's route,
02:59but it is possible that it will fly higher.
03:01According to the Reuters News Agency, the crash happened more than 300 feet in the air
03:06according to the flight tracking website Flightradar24.
03:10You had a airliner coming in, American Airlines. He was doing everything right. He was on track.
03:18And for some reason, we had a helicopter that was at the same height, obviously when they hit,
03:27but pretty much the same height, and going at an angle that was unbelievably bad.
03:33According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines,
03:36in the crash of two aircrafts, it is possible that it will happen anywhere in the world,
03:40even in the Philippines, especially if the route is not followed.
03:44There should also be lateral and vertical separation.
03:48They are separated by altitude.
03:51If one is at 1,000, the other is probably at 500.
03:55So they are separated by 500 feet.
03:59And there is also lateral separation,
04:02so if there is leading traffic, the next traffic will be five miles away.
04:09The IAEA and the Villamor Air Base are using the same runway as the commercial planes and the Air Force.
04:16One runway, one frequency, one language.
04:21So it means that when they broadcast, all the traffic within the vicinity of that aerodrome,
04:29they know what is happening.
04:32That is why it is important that the passengers are not only pilots,
04:36but also air traffic controllers.
04:38For GMA Integrated News, I am Joseph Morong, your witness.
04:44My dear viewers, be the first to watch.
