03 February - national forecast presented by Alex Deakin.
Transcript
00:00Quite mild out there for early February, but colder weather is on the way,
00:05especially by the end of the week.
00:07But let's get back to Monday nights, because wet weather working its way into the northwest
00:12could be quite heavy for a time, slipping its way across Northern Ireland
00:16and then really pepping up as we go into southwest Scotland.
00:19There's a Met Office yellow warning in place across Dumfries and Galloway,
00:22but much of western Scotland having a soggy night.
00:24Also windy, as this rain band works in, it'll turn pretty gusty and blustery.
00:29The breeze picking up a little over England and Wales, that should help to clear any fog,
00:33but likely to stay quite murky across East Anglia and the southeast.
00:37Temperatures generally a little warmer to start Tuesday than they were to start Monday.
00:42We could see temperatures getting close to freezing,
00:44where we see some breaks in the cloud over eastern England,
00:46but generally four or five degrees here, seven or eight to start the day further west,
00:50but we will have the rain around.
00:52So a wet start through the central belt across Cumbria, north and west Wales,
00:57and this zone of rain slowly works its way eastwards, lingering for much of the morning.
01:03So a pretty wet morning for the west coast of Wales, much of the Lake District and southern Scotland.
01:08It may take most of the morning before it clears from even the central belt.
01:12But it should turn drier and brighter in the north and the west,
01:15but we'll see plenty of showers packing into northwestern Scotland.
01:19Much of eastern England will stay dry, should get a little brighter through the day,
01:23but rain working into the Midlands and across southwest England during the day.
01:28So a spell of rain here, but it will be kind of easing off as we go through the day.
01:32As skies brighten in Wales, northwest England later,
01:35we should see those temperatures hopping up to double digits.
01:38In fact, generally a fairly mild day for February.
01:42The heavy showers in the far northwest will swing more widely across northern Scotland
01:47during the course of the evening.
01:49Could be some hail and thunder mixed in with the showers
01:51that keep feeding in here through Tuesday nights.
01:53That weather front though does clear away, allowing clearer skies for many
01:57and the winds will ease as well during Tuesday night.
02:01So that will allow it to turn a little chillier again.
02:04Again, most towns and cities staying above freezing,
02:06but in rural spots I think we will have more of a frost on Wednesday morning compared to Tuesday morning.
02:12But generally Wednesday is looking like a fine bright day.
02:15It'll still be fairly breezy in western Scotland.
02:18We'll still see showers chugging in here.
02:20A few of them also for northern parts of Northern Ireland.
02:23So expect a few showers on and off through the day.
02:25The odd one for England and Wales drifting in on the breeze,
02:28but most of England and Wales dry and bright along with southern and eastern Scotland
02:33on Wednesday with some decent spirals of sunshine.
02:35Temperatures though will be down.
02:37Colder air is coming in because that's a cold front that's swinging across the country during Tuesday.
02:42But still 8, 9 degrees, maybe double digits along the south coast.
02:46It is going to get colder still though come the end of the week,
02:50even though high pressure is moving in.
02:52We are going to see a switch in the wind direction.
02:54So just rewind to Tuesday.
02:56There's that front clearing away through the evening.
02:58High pressure is building in behind.
03:00The winds are coming in from the Atlantic, from a westerly direction.
03:04But look what happens as we go through the week.
03:06High pressure moves in, bringing a lot of dry weather, plenty of sunshine, especially so on Thursday.
03:12But as the high drifts to the north, that allows the winds to start to swing in from the east.
03:18And easterly winds this time of year drawing in some cold air from the continent.
03:23So it is going to turn quite a bit colder as we go through Friday and particularly into the weekend.
