Hurricanes are among the most powerful and destructive natural disasters on Earth. But how do hurricanes form, and which storms were the most devastating in history? :tornado:

In this video, we explore the science behind hurricane formation, from warm ocean waters to the Coriolis effect, and count down the top 5 most powerful hurricanes ever recorded! From Hurricane Katrina to Hurricane Patricia, see how these storms reshaped history.

:fire: Top 5 Most Powerful Hurricanes:
:keycap_5: Hurricane Katrina (2005) – $125 billion in damages
:keycap_4: Hurricane Maria (2017) – Largest blackout in U.S. history
:keycap_3: Hurricane Irma (2017) – One of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes
:keycap_2: Hurricane Gilbert (1988) – 185 mph winds over the Caribbean
:keycap_1: Hurricane Patricia (2015) – Record-breaking 215 mph winds!

As climate change raises ocean temperatures, will hurricanes get even stronger?

00:00Imagine a storm so powerful it can flatten cities, cause massive floods,
00:04and generate winds stronger than a jet engine.
00:07This is a hurricane, one of the most destructive forces of nature.
00:12But how do they form?
00:13And which hurricanes were the most devastating in history?
00:16Let's dive in!
00:18Hurricanes form over warm ocean waters, at least 80°F, 27°C, or warmer.
00:26Warm, moist air rises, creating low pressure at the surface.
00:31More air rushes in, evaporates, and rises.
00:35As the air cools, it condenses into clouds.
00:38This process repeats, creating a massive spinning storm.
00:42The Coriolis effect causes the storm to rotate counterclockwise in the northern hemisphere
00:47and clockwise in the southern hemisphere.
00:50If wind speeds reach 74 mph, 119 km per h, it officially becomes a hurricane.
00:57Hurricanes are classified into 5 categories based on wind speed,
01:01with Category 5 being the most extreme.
01:04Now let's count down the top 5 most powerful hurricanes in history.
01:09Number 5. Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
01:13With winds reaching 175 mph, or 280 km per h,
01:19it became one of the deadliest U.S. hurricanes,
01:22flooding New Orleans and causing over $125 billion in damages.
01:28Number 4. Hurricane Maria in 2017.
01:32This storm also reached 175 mph, or 280 km per h.
01:39It devastated Puerto Rico, causing the largest blackout in U.S. history and thousands of deaths.
01:46Number 3. Hurricane Irma in 2017.
01:50With wind speeds of 180 mph, or 290 km per h,
01:55it became one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes, affecting Florida and the Caribbean.
02:01Number 2. Hurricane Gilbert in 1988.
02:05This monster storm reached 185 mph, or 295 km per h,
02:12making it one of the most intense hurricanes in history, hitting Jamaica and Mexico hard.
02:18Number 1. Hurricane Patricia in 2015.
02:22This storm holds the record with wind speeds of 215 mph, or 345 km per h,
02:30making it the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere.
02:35It hit Mexico with extreme winds, but thankfully, it weakened before causing widespread destruction.
02:42Hurricanes are nature's most powerful storms, and their impact can be devastating.
02:47With climate change affecting ocean temperatures, will we see even stronger storms in the future?
