00:00Practically, the whole of Gaza is a pile of rubble, twisted steel and concrete, and yet

00:05almost all Palestinians who lost their homes are hell-bent to stay and rebuild their lives

00:10and homes.

00:11This, as U.S. President Donald Trump's latest statement of his plan to take over rebuilding

00:16Gaza and resettling all Gaza residents and Palestinians in Egypt and Jordan, a proposition

00:22only Israel seems willing to endorse, while all the world condemns such move as an imperial

00:27and illegal land grab by the United States, as VOA's Patsy Witokoswara reports.

00:34More than 500,000 Palestinians, almost a quarter of the population, have crossed into northern

00:40Gaza.

00:41They're defiant in the face of President Donald Trump's announcement on Tuesday that the U.S.

00:46will take over the Palestinian enclave.

00:50Trump can dream on if he thinks he can displace or expel us.

00:54On Tuesday, Trump was asked if he would send American troops to seize Gaza.

00:59As far as Gaza is concerned, we'll do what is necessary.

01:02If it's necessary, we'll do that.

01:04We're going to take over that piece.

01:07White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt clarified his remarks Wednesday.

01:11That does not mean boots on the ground in Gaza.

01:13It does not mean American taxpayers will be funding this effort.

01:16It means Donald Trump, who is the best dealmaker on the planet, is going to strike a deal with

01:20our partners in the region.

01:22But partners in the region condemned the idea, including Jordan and Egypt, the two

01:27neighboring countries Trump is pushing to accept Palestinians.

01:31Jordan's King Abdullah met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Amman Wednesday, the same

01:36day that top Palestinian officials met Egypt's foreign minister in Cairo.

01:40They stressed the need for a two-state solution.

01:43So did United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.

01:47It is vital to stay true to the bedrock of international law.

01:52It is essential to avoid any form of ethnic cleansing.

01:56Saudi Arabia, the geopolitical and cultural leader of the Arab world, said on state TV

02:01that their support for Palestinian statehood is, quote, firm, steadfast and unwavering.

02:09This firm position is not subject to negotiation or outbidding.

02:13The statement contradicts Trump's claim on Tuesday that the Saudis are not demanding

02:17a Palestinian homeland.

02:19Saudi Arabia is going to be very helpful and they have been very helpful.

02:22They want peace in the Middle East.

02:24The Saudis had been negotiating with the Biden administration to recognize Israel in exchange

02:29for a security and energy pact.

02:31But talks were halted by Hamas' October 7, 2023 attack and Israel's counteroffensive.

02:37A deal with the Saudis would have expanded the Trump-brokered 2020 Abraham Accords that

02:42normalized ties between Israel and Arab countries.

02:46Riyadh will be more cautious, at least for now.

02:49Mohammed bin Salman at the moment doesn't see any kind of immediate benefit for him

02:54to go ahead with President Trump's plan, which is, by the way, outrageous.

03:01And the whole world seems to be against it.

03:03That includes adversaries such as China and Russia and allies including Germany, France

03:09and Britain.

03:10They must be allowed home.

03:12They must be allowed to rebuild and we should be with them in that rebuild on the way to

03:18a two-state solution.

03:20The White House now says Trump's plan is to only temporarily relocate Palestinians.

03:25It's not a livable place for any human being and I think it's actually quite evil to suggest

03:30that people should live in such dire conditions.

03:32Levitt said Trump will speak with regional leaders in the coming days.

03:36Meanwhile, demonstrators gathered in cities across the U.S. to protest Trump's early actions,

03:42including on Gaza.
